I had a run in with a kerb and lost frown
Clearly I'll be need the services of a smart repairer/ alloy refurb.
But this is a newish Michelin tyre with 6mm of tread on it.
It's holding pressure no problem and can't see any ply or cords.
Do I need to replace this? Will it fail an MOT? Will it come up as an advisory item? Would you just replace it anyway?
If I was able to keep the tyre, could I glue the damaged bit back in place?

It’s the rim protector and it (nearly) protected your rim. That’s all it does. The tyre is absolutely fine.

It is fine. This damage to a rim-protector comes up regularly on here, and I have had it occur to me.

Everyone so far seems to think it's fine. Is it ok to glue this down prior to the MOT? I guess the MOT tester would want to see how deep it is?

Glue it. If there was damage to the carcass, it would be evident by bulging.

I'm definitely one to stress about things! I'm thinking the damage looks fairly superficial, it's just annoying me. Would you glue it down before or after the MOT?

Before. This happened to me and I soon forgot about the repair altogether.

Before. Depending on the garage if they cant find anything else wrong they will try to get a new tyre out of you ifvtheg find a rubber flap.

I would not glue it down.

Glued down the MOT tester (or anyone else) will not be able to judge how superficial the side wall (non)damage is.

That said, I have a larger flap hanging out of my rim protector and it does my head in.

Glue it down. What can't be seen, can't be tested and they're not allowed to take things apart. Just try to not make it obvious though.

A pass with or without an advisory?

I would not advise it. Why not ask the question on the 'ask an MOT tester thread? there are more of us testers on there to advise you

Thanks I've posted there, hadn't thought of that.
Just need to stop stressing about it. I'm such a perfectionist so it's going to annoy the life out of me even if it is fine from an MOT point of view. But times are hard so can't really justify throwing away £200 to replace the tyre if it's not necessary. I drive a lot of miles anyway so chances are it'll need replacing before next year's MOT.
When you're a perfectionist it's painful accepting that a daily runner can't be perfect:/

Then good chance a new tyre could have the same happen

Had one similar on the wife's car, couldn't see wire, consensus on here was that it was OK and leave it.

MOT tester failed it - wife wasn't happy.

I reported back here and it was at that point that some bright spark on here announced that of course it had been a fail all along.

If you are comfortable run it for now and change it just before the MOT.

If it is exactly like the photo, there is zero reason for failure.

Did the tester also try and sell you a new tyre ?
