Self build house
Discussion
Well actually a question about building plots.
Near where I live there is a lane through a village. On either side of this lane there are houses of mixed types, some modern, some old stone or old tiber frame with a few thatched roofs. At the end of the village is a small derelict house on a very large garden. Standing at the side of this I can see the modern houses on the estate where I live just a couple of fields away.
The plan is to buy the land and house and bung a bigger house on it for me and Mrs C.
Does anyone know what the chances of getting planning permission would be as I think this property is in green belt.

Hard to say. It depends upon the size and style etc. Will be worthwhile calling the local planning dept. and maybe lodging an outline planning application (small fee, brief description of what you plan to do and the plot marked out on an Ordnance Survey plan) just to see if you can get an agreement in principal.

a2z is correct. Talk to planning. You may not be aware that you are also able to apply for planning on land you do not own if you want to be absolutely sure you can get what you want. But ...of course they might raise the price if they know this.
According to your profile, you are located in Gloucester?
I'm guessing that puts you in the Cotswolds District Council area?
I work for the Cotswold region of a major housebuilder (my regional office is based in Tewkesbury), so I'm pretty familiar with their Planning foibles.
I think it's fair to say that they are one of the most fastidious planning authorities in the country, when it comes to detail design, so you will need specialist advice at some stage in the design process. They tend to be pretty conservative and traditionalist, so tell 'em it's going to have a ladder frame chassis and you'll be fine!
As a2z says, an Outline Application would enable you to establish whether the project is a goer or not in, but don't expect that to be the end of your troubles by any means!
Also, as garyhun says, lodging an outline appliction tends to 'blow your cover', both in terms of alerting the owner of the property to its potential value, and in giving the local nimbys and busybodies a chance to mobilize against you. I'd be inclined to simply stick to informal contact with the Planning Officer and talking to an Architect or Designer who is familiar with the area in the first instance - they should be able to give you a pretty solid idea of whether your ideas are feasible before you submit an application.
Contact me off list - I may be able to give you further, more detailed advice, particularly if you can tell me the name of the village.
edited to add...the ladder frame comment was only partly a joking reference to the discussions we've had on chassis design - I'm in the process of (very slowly) designing a house for myself using a spaceframe exoskeleton (no, really!)...I'm not expecting to get a smooth ride from the Planners when I finally find a suitable plot to build it on!
