Left in for a service this morning, main dealer, 3rd year service, 13k miles.

The inevitable call comes around lunch time. Sir....just to request permission to fit front discs and pads. The pads are at 2mm and the disks are heavily corroded. I decline.

Get the car home, wheel off, pads not even at the 50% mark. Measuring 10mm on the vernier. Discs clean as a whistle.

What really winds me up is that had it been my wife, or many other unsuspecting customers, they would have instantly given the go ahead based on 'safety' and 'main dealer respectability'.

Took some pics and will email them to the service manager tomorrow for all the good it will do.

Ask for the report to be emailed then reply with photos.

They will try and fob you off claiming they never said anything about the brakes.

Had the exact same thing last week, only they also wanted to throw in a cambelt change at the same time because “they had no evidence it had been done”.

The problem was that only two weeks (and 200 miles) previously, they had the car in for said cambelt, and provided the cursory healthcheck and associated video, proclaiming that the discs and pads were in a great condition.

When I questioned them over the “abnormalities” in their service records and their inability to check brakes properly, they tried to convince me that I was being petty and should have just gone along with their suggestions.

Sufficed to say, I’m not taking the car there again, which inevitably means a much longer round trip to the next closest main dealer.

Left my car at a garage for tyres, get a call - “ it’s all done - we put it on the wheel alignment machine and it needs a small adjustment”.

I said I don’t want it done - instant response “it’s all ready for collection”

there’s no way they would take the car out the fitting bay onto the hunter alignment ramp to check the alignment speculatively.

I wished I would of asked for a photo of my car on the ramp showing the alleged misalignment.

everytime I go there they always find stuff that I know doesn’t need doing.

Took one of our cars i for a service and was told the rear pads and discs needed doing.

As it turns out they did as I was going to do them but given the very reasonable price they quoted for a main dealer, I let them get in with it.

Increasing dealers have a ‘drive over’ alignment checker.

Like this: https://pro-align.co.uk/product/hunter-quick-check...

Or they could have just been lying.

I had this common attempted scam at a bmw main dealer. It went badly for them, especially the service manager. They even have a name for it, upselling.

Upselling is to kind. To me that’s when I go in to buy a 320d and come out with a 330d. This is just plain deception.

Had my car serviced a couple of weeks ago.

They did pick up that it needed new rear pads (it doesn't), but despite measuring the rear tread of the tyres and declaring them okay, missed the rather large gash in the sidewall.

I wonder whether they even bother checking any of it. The video they sent was filmed in front of the car without actually showing me anything.

Pads at 10mm yet aren't yet at 50% worn...

Are you measuring just the friction material or the whole pad?
