Can anyone tell me how many special 50p pieces there have been and what they commemorate?

I've found these in my change tray:

1998 - EU coin ....why?
2000 - Public libraries ....50 years of them?
2004 - Picture of runner ...why?

Does anyone know more details or of other special 50p pieces?

I think there have been 9 different 50 pence pieces, including the standard Brittania one.

Knew I'd seen something on this recently ...

BBC said:

Apart from the regular image of Britannia seated, there have been nine other 50p designs.

The designs reflected the UK joining the EEC (1973), the completion of the Single Market (1992-93), 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings (1994), UK's presidency of the EU (1998), 50th anniversary of the NHS (1998), 150th anniversary of the Public Libraries Act (2000), 100th anniversary of the formation of the Women's Social and Political Union (2003), 50th anniversary of the first four-minute mile by Roger Bannister (2004), 250th anniversary of Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language.

I've found out this so far and that there have been various other proof coins/specials that weren't circulated.

Old size
1992/3 EC Presidency - Conference Table
1994 D-Day - Ships & Planes

New Smaller Size
1998 25th Anniversary UK membership of EU
2000 150th Anniversary British Public Libraries
2003 Suffragettes - Votes for Women  (not sure if this was issued or not)
2004 Four Minute Mile

Should probably pay more attention to shrapnel in pocket.

The 50p is legal tender for amounts up to £10

So you can't use 21 50 pence pieces to pay for something that is £10.50? Strange!

I never knew that, or the limits on all other coins except £1 and £2.

I do remember a three-legged coin, but I'm not 100% certain it was a 50p coin.

Did you know...?

£2 coins fit perfectly into 35mm plastic film containers. I discovered you can get about £36-worth in each one. Then I discovered they were better spent

This commercial brought to you by the Government Agency for Fitting Coins into Boxes. Full report will be presented to the EU Parliament in 3 years time. Only cost £3M!

Interesting, the legal tender bit.

"The 1p coin is legal tender for amounts up to 20p."

But when banks and shops send 1p's around the country, they are in coin bags of 50p or £1.

So, if I was to steal these bags, would I be committing a crime, as they weren't legal tender anyway?

The Isle of man do loads of commemoratve coins, to cash in on the collector market.

They do a Christmas 50p every year and there are several 50p coins with TT racing scenes.

The 3 legs is the coat of arms of the Isle of Man and turns up all over the place.
