I’ve been looking at 911s on and off for a while, this is potentially a first time Porsche purchase.

I’ve seen what I think is a gen 1 997 C4s with all the nice bits plus a hartech rebuild which for me is huge peace of mind. Good history, sensible owners and good spec

Are these a “safe” buy in that I won’t take a bath if I buy it and experience it for a year?

The car I’m looking at is an 08 and priced at just under 40k

Without knowing mileage for that sort of money as a newb maybe put in £5k more and buy a gen 2 C4S or £10k-15k more and a 997 GTS (GTS will defo have the most solid residuals). I think a gen 1 unless low mileage needs to be £35k ish.

Having said that I think the gen 1 C2S at 911 Virgin to roll out for concours and molly coddle ie say 1000 miles a year worth every penny of it’s asking price. It’s the one I’d buy (and use like I stole it thereby killing its value) smile

It’s done 56k and it won’t be a daily, driven a couple of times per week I’d think at most.

As much as I’d love to punt another 10-15k into a GTS the reality is this is potentially my biggest car purchase ever and I’m not comfortable spending any more.

The Hartech rebuild is a huge selling point for me with this car

I’d be buying a Gen II for that money. 355 bhp vs 385 bhp. Tip vs PDK if going down the auto route.

The Hartech is a good thing to have in the service history but it looks like the seller is trying to recoup the spend.

I’ve looked at some Gen 2s for similar money but none seem to be quite as nice as this Gen 1 car.

There is a growing split between manual and PDK prices on 997.2 - you don't mention whether you are going manual or not?

I'm in the market for a 997.2 S with a manual. Anything with the right spec (ie a nice colour and not bland white or silver) carries a hefty premium.

Slim pickings out there.

It’s a manual I’m after, I can appreciate the PDK but this time I want three pedals and a gearstick. My boring daily can be auto

If anyone is interested I am going to be selling my 997.1 C4S after its trip to the Le Mans Classic. Its a manual, 60k miles with PSE etc.

Hi Martin, maintenance costs can be heavy on these cars. However from my experience Hartech should have carried out a full report on the car prior to rebuild. Ask the seller for the report and the rebuild invoice. If all is clear and it benefitted from a full rebuild then fingers crossed the short term running costs should be fairly manageable! Good luck!

Thanks for the info I am viewing it tomorrow so I will get to see the history for myself

The rebuild was done in 2013, so any inspection report on general condition I can confidently disregard as it was 10 years and 17000 miles ago

I bought a .2 C4S cab from 911 Virgin for £48k back in March 2017 with 18k miles. Kept it for 12 months and sold it with just under 30k miles back to them for same price. Doesn't matter whether .1 or .2 the true cost of ownership is when you sell the car. Ours was a fantastic experience used it on track days etc and drove it like we stole it and best thing SWMBO got used to 911 handling ie understeer on track in a safe environment. True cost of ownership is what you sell it for once you move on not the purchase price. Best advice is try and find a very low miles 997 if defo selling after 12 months. I knew we had a new factory order 991.2 turbo s cab on the way for March 18 so wanted something with strong residuals in between and a luckily genuine one owner 18k mile 997 just turned up. Doesn't matter gen 1 or gen 2 the internet stories re engines blowing up exaggerated IMO wink
