Hyundai Tucson - school bus take 2
Discussion
Last year we decided to get a school bus as our dailies were not ideal for the purpose of ferrying little ones to school and back. Little one no 1 asked for something SUV-ish, so we got a Qashqai last year.

I liked the look of the car, but pretty much everything else, bar the lovely panoramic roof was subpar. Aircon was not working at all and an alarm would start randomly. It turns out that the internal sensor was faulty too. The part that necessitated refusing the car was when the car did a random emergency break all by itself on a completely empty road. The build quality was rather poor too. At the time someone suggested trying a new Tucson, which we did and placed the order straight after the test drive. The difference between the two was night and day. The only annoying issue was delivery time was 9 months, but we were so impressed with the car that we got a non-descript VW tide-over bus.
The new car was finally delivered on the 1st of March, and now, after two months, it lives up to all expectations. It's quiet, comfortable, spacious, pretty much all the toys that you can imagine and on the school run returns over 75mpg.

Little ones fully approve which is the most important part. Heated rear seats were a hit during the cold spells.

75mpg?!
I assume it’s a Hybrid then? We’ve got the previous gen Tucson which has been great for the last few years. I’m slowly trying to convince the wife she wants to upgrade it for one of these…
It is indeed a self-charging hybrid. To be fair, to get that you need to do the driving miss daisy routine. On one occasion I've managed to get to 91mpg. It became a game of let's see how much can we get out of it. If we are running late it usually goes down to 52-54mpg. It was doing less in really cold weather. I assume it’s a Hybrid then? One of my mates has ordered one of these for their family to replace their trusty Mondeo wagon.
They ordered in February and were told 6-7 months for delivery.
It depends on the spec, but tell your mate to get the order and the build slot number from a dealer, then check the actual delivery date with Hyundai UK. Dealers have been wildly optimistic in the past. They ordered in February and were told 6-7 months for delivery.

I didn't like these when they first came out, but they've really grown on me. Looks wise second only to the current Sportage imo. Never did like the Qashqai... we nearly bought an older model but decided against it, doesn't sound like things improved!
Fit and finish on Qashqai is really bad. I liked how they looked from the outside, but the attitude of the dealer who wanted to recharge air-con on a brand new car for, in his words, 'measly £149' and only an hour of 'your time'. Saying that Nissan Europe, who was dealing with rejection of the car, were spectacular, made everything very easy and provided us with courtesy cars, while they were sorting full refund. There is one annoying thing with Tucson; air-con, and most other controls, are touch-screen. What was wrong with dials? Cost?
Looks nice. I won't cover my story with the one I had here, but I will recommend that you keep the seals around the pano roof treated with rubber care/gummi pflege after washing. Otherwise I can pretty much guarantee the roof will start to creak and rattle when the blind is open.
I hope it treats you well.

Another +1 for these. We had the previous generation petrol for three years and it was fantastic. Never missed a beat, was comfortable, quiet and great on long journeys with a seeming aversion to using fuel (ours was the normal petrol/manual version). The main downside was a lack of power so we started to look around for something with a bit more oomph and I accidentally bought a 3.0d Land Rover Disco5 which has moved the goalposts somewhat…
But enjoy - I’m a big fan.

Japanese badge, British build quality!

I've quite enjoyed your thread, till it stop being fun. Hopefully, mine will fare a bit better. I think I've found a decent dealer, failing that BiL is a rather good solicitor. I hope it treats you well.

It wasn't just the poor build quality. It was the nonchalance of the dealer / Nissan UK in resolving issues. I was willing to give them a chance to resolve the issues till they suggested that I should pay for refilling the aircon on a 3-day-old car. Nissan Europe has been very, very good. Greendubber said:
We've had ours for 18 months (Premium self charging hybrid) and it's been excellent. Big enough, comfy on long journeys and not too much of a slouch if you get your foot down.
Hopefully yours sees you well!
Thanks. Two months in, all is peachy. I still hate the touchscreen thingy for aircon/radio / media. I did get an adapter for wireless Android Auto so that's sorted and it's working perfectly. Do you have buttons for gears or a normal shifter? Hopefully yours sees you well!

Ours is automatic with the buttons rather than a shifter. One thing that does annoy me is the amount of beeps it emits and the fact lane departure can't be turned off permanently. I find it a bit intrusive sometimes and the constant beeping gets on my tits a bit.
Other than that is a great car.

Haha it wasn't much fun for me either! Apologies for putting a slight downer on the thread. I'm sure mine is the exception to the rule. It was an early car nearly 2 years older than yours, I should think they will have ironed out most of the things by now. I certainly see a hell of a lot more of them on the road now.
All said and done, the first 12 months it was a lovely car, and when it went wrong the dealer tried the best they could and they also got me out of it, can't complain!

I agree with the screen etc, it's a smudge fest after a couple of journeys and it's a bit of a faff to use at first. I've looked at the wireless adapters for android auto, which one did you go for as some of them appear to have mixed reviews.

I use it with deezer and works really well. Apparently Ultimate has 'KRELL' (never heard of it) upgraded sound system which, to my non-golden ears, sounds well.
Pressing /0\ button on the steering wheel for 4 secs gets rid of lane departure thing, so I'm not too bothered about it, but agree, it would be nice to just be able to switch it off.
I love the cooling seats (never had them before). Little one loves the pull up shades in the back ('Dad, I'm not director, I'm dictator now!') bless him.
Btw did you get the spare wheel, apparently all UK cars are supplied only with that mickey mouse foam/compressor thing.
