Has anyone owed or driven all three of these cars?

E60 5 Series Touring (530d or 535d)
F01 7 Series (730d)
F13 or F06 6 Series (640d)

I'd be interested to know which drives the best, and how much difference in refinement there is between them.

I want an old diesel to chug up and down the motorway (circa 500 miles per week) and the way I'm looking at these is:

5 Series = roomy boot in touring spec.
7 Series = luxurious place to sit.
6 Series = might actually be slightly quick and fun.

I've not had a chance to drive any of them yet, hence trying to scout opinions from those who have!

I've had an E61 5 series touring albeit in 520d form, and I've also had a F13 640d coupe that I covered 70k miles in.

You will obviously lose the practicality side of things in the 640d/730d, but they will be a nicer place to sit I reckon.

The 5 series did drive well I thought with nice steering and driving position, but I preferred the 640d to sit in and the 40d engine mated to the ZF8 auto was a lovely combo I thought.

The 640d won't be much fun, but it does cover ground very well, and it offers a brilliant performance/economy mix too(40mpg overall in my hands).

If you don't need the practicality then I think I'd go for either the 640d or 730d.

The 640d is the pick with a nice interior & a nice drive.

Any reason you're ruling out the F10 5 series?

F13 640d is superb for what you've described but is essentially a two seater. Big boot though. It's what I bought for the exact same brief.

If you need proper back seats, you end up with a heavier, slower and less efficient car, and I can't help decide between the others on your list.

Of the three I've only briefly driven a 640d in 2015 but was extremely impressed. Ivory full leather interior was fantastic and the car itself looked great.

It's the one I'd go for.
