Do you mean E39 535i?!

If so yes, bin it and get another 530i...

Personally I'm not even sure the 540i is worth it over a well looked after 530i...

The M54 is such a superb engine and the 530i handling is sweeter too..

OK with the 540i you get the V8 and it's rumble...

But in the real world on normal day to day driving... The 530i, IMO, is the better car...

More so over the 535i which is more or less the same power, but heavier and with the slow steering box...

Agree with all you've said.

But I meant going from a 2001 530i to a 2010 335i.

My typing is why I'm not in charge of the launch codes laugh
Ah! It said 535i that's why I thought you'd gone sideways on the E39s laugh

Hmmm

For me an E93 335i is no where near a match for the E39 530i Sport - superb chassis, drive, comfort and engine...

The 335i is a superb engine; but the only E9x I'd ever consider personally would be the E91 touring; which is what I was initially looking for when I sold my Japanese import 530i Sport touring back in Sept 2021

But they were too small when I finally got around to finding one; so bought an F01 730D instead biggrin

Ha!

It's a difficult balance deciding what is a make or break desire and what is just a fancy.

I guess, in part, that's what makes it fun. As each car has its good points, so too does the next. But not necessarily a full compliment of improvements over the previous.

Almost like life partners... scratchchin

hehe

I think I'm just a bit disappointed with the high speed stability of the E93 335 initially. After changing all four corners (damp+ springs). Maybe it's sitting too high at the front as it feels a little floaty.

The E39 just wafted everywhere and was so settled. I've never experienced that balance before. It's only in retrospect that I appreciate it.
From my reading and other E9x owners on here; the Birds suspension is the kit to go for etc...

Im loved my M54 E39s, all 3 530i's were superb. The 530i Sport touring the cream of the crop. The 540i was fine; but not for me; that's why I sold it and now in a more modern BMW, 2015 F31 and I absolutely love the car...

It's the modern version of the 530i to me! Very similar size; very well equipped and very comfy, but can drive & handle superbly when needed

I agree entirely with your E9x experience. If you read my 335d thread it documents how I made my car ride and handle more like an E39. Sadly a standard E9x is not a fine riding and handling car.

Transforming one isn’t a quick or easy task.

I hired an E60 520i in Belgium in 2003/4 - they had just come out. Cloth trim, manual box and just about enough power to pull your foreskin back. It was like driving an old Carlton. Utter st. biglaugh

That and the run flat ride, iDrive and all that crap. The E39 520i, whilst a bit short on oomph, looked and felt like an expensive quality car. The E60 just didn't.

Where did you have it aligned?

My E92 335i feels fine even into very naughty speeds. Mine is on Eibach springs with Bilstein B4S dampers, M3 LCA’s, tension struts, camber plates with the camber pin mod. String Theory have since set it up really nicely.

Daft question, but is the light nose with the roof up or down? Just wondering if having the roof down is negatively affecting it given that it moves a load of weight over the back end.

I went from an E39 M5 to E93 335i, it was no ‘M’ car for sure, but I had the birds full suspension upgrade and Quaife ATB fitted and this transformed the handling and tamed the wayward rear end. It wasn’t a match for the M5, but it was vastly improved.

OP, my E93, 335i SE feels pretty planted at high speeds - no floatiness - it's on the OEM sports suspension and non run-flat tyres (Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6's.

I miss my E39s, they were such great cars. I had a 528i and a 530i Sport following it. They started to become liabilities as a daily though, easily £1000 or so a year in unplanned maintenance got a bit much. But both were very reliable. The 528i only let me down and stranded me once when it’s 11 year old factory fitted battery failed.

I’d have another but not as a daily.
