Moving into the smallest gear at the back can help realignment with the derailleur and tends to be quicker.

That's good advice and then practice makes perfect. Not much else you can do apart from turning the clutch off if you have one or locking the mech if it's a SRAM with that functionality.

Keep a rag handy then you can grab the chain/mech without worrying about getting greasy

I don't have a disc brake bike but am I right in thinking you shouldn't pull the relevant brake lever while the wheel is out?

Correct although easy enough to push the pistons back in with a tool sharp enough to damage the seals biggrin

Update.

This has literally changed my life!

Can't believe I never realised it was possible to do this.

Glad I could help.

I think SRAM have a patent on this and Shimano can't do it as a result. I am surprised no one thought about it before them though as the mech was invented decades ago!
