I wonder what the most underpowered and sluggish car made this centuary is. And the slowest one made in the 90's. Excluding non diesel/petrol rides?

I had a diesel ford fiesta a few years back. Boy, that was slow, I had to change down to first on a fairly steep incline.

The Missus had a mk2 Fiesta auto once- 0-60 was 45 seconds. took about 3 miles to get to 80mph iirc. Traded it in for a XR3I 16v- that felt like a rocket ship after the Fiasco.

I didnt know that kind of speed was... possible

My old 2CV (Tin Snail) would come close, it was painfully slow! Was my very first car, as all I could afford to run and insure at the time (Part time job only whilst at sixth form!).

When did the 2CV stop production? Was that 80's or 90's?

For the 90s one i am sure it was the nissan serena diesel in terms of acceleration. but there's no doubt in my mind that someone won't find something more obscure...

Not sure, was it not mid 80's?? But mine was rather old and neglected when I got it, hence the even slower than standard performance!!

The mrs drives one of those (XLD), unbelievably slow. The speedo under-reads massively too (reads 40mph when doing 33).

I remember that the Volvo 360GLE/GLT range had the accolade of the slowest 2 litre fuel injected car you could buy, a basic 1.3 carburetted Austin Maestro/Ford Escort was loads quicker.

for some reason it has stuck in my brain that it does/did 0-60 in 22seconds...that's slooooow!

somebody asked how fast my car was the other day..I took a modicum of pleasure in explaining that if we started next to each other when he got to 60 i'd be doing 115

The super beetle had a 1600cc engine, and was one of the faster beetles....now the original 1131cc split window standard model beetle on the other hand...

1945-1953 Volkswagen beetle 1131cc (standard model)
0-60.......37.2 secs
top seed...64mph
power......25bhp@3300
1/4 mile....forget it!

skip to "why would I want one" (actually thats a good question, having driven one I can agree they are hatefull little things) but I doubt a 1.3 maestro would do 0-60 in less than 10 secs.

My mother's W reg Skoda Fabia 1.9 SDi. Yep, an unblown oil burner.

The Skoda website says:-
Max Power bhp [kw]/rpm 64 [47] /4000
Max Torque lb.ft[Nm]/rpm 92 [125] /1600
Max Speed mph [km/h] 96 [154]
Acceleration 0-62mph 18.6

All lies. I've thrashed the thing to within an inch of its life and couldn't get much past an indicated 80mph.

I'm just going off the sum up section that was in the back of CAR magazine in the eighties. I dont know where they get 'under 10 secs' from? IIRC the Volvo was about 13.8 secs and the 1.3 Maestro was 12.5 secs. I will look it up

Ah yes, but in reverse they are the fastest cars, the rubber band gearbox means they go just as fast backwards as forwards.
