Slightly older BMW’s, are they exclusively driven by knobs?

Something I’ve noticed more and more recently, what is it about past generation BMWs that attracts bad driving and knob drivers who seem to think they own the road, is it because it’s the “ultimate driving machine”

It seems to only affect older non current generation models


In the past week I’ve seen

2016 white 118d, swerve across double solid white lines on hatchings to drive 100m over taking cars in a 40 limit while kicking up all the stones and dust

2019 white f30 320d “gapping” traffic on a 50mph dual carriageway and then using a bus lane to gain space

2018 m135i black, overtaking on a blind bend and nearly causing a head on collision with me

2019 2 series coupe pulling out on a corner to over take a dump truck with a steam of traffic coming the other way.

F10 5 series putting its hazards on and driving down the hard shoulder in a managed motorway to get to the junction quicker despite red X above the lane

I drive an old BMW and I’m not a knob, so I guess the answer is No

I just drove into Leicester and back and the standard of driving by virtually everyone was atrocious.

I don't expect that suggestion will go down too well around these parts. But Yep, confirmed.
And worse than ever as they can be picked up for next to nothing these days.
I definitely wouldn't say it's entirely BMW, but safely in the overwhelming majority.

On recent fairly long journeys across the SW to SE in relative peace and orderliness, it's only a matter of time before another massive throbber comes along in a few year old X / M Sport something or other , cutting / slicing / forcing their way through and around the traffic, and generally causing annoyance and displeasure in all directions.

Any visible disapproval is invariably met with the standard fragile-ego response of brake check / swerving / wild gesticulation etc.etc.

Yes, 2019, 4 years ago, end of PCP and no doubt bought from a second hand dealer at 11.9% APR, new model in 2022. So indeed the old one.

A 2019 car is hardly old.

The M135/40i cars do unfortunately attract a certain type of driver but so does a Golf R / S3 / A45.

I thought this would be a rant about actually old BMW’s.

I've noticed whilst driving and out walking that it's any of the German crap that is badly or aggressively driven. BMW's are pretty bad but I think that Mercedes and Audi are pretty much up there - Golfs as well. Scrotes+drug money/credit = voila!

Sounds like there must be some regional variations as that's not what I am seeing where I am.

I think we end up with this type of thread every now and again, the answer is obviously no, many terrible drivers in Audis, Nissans, Land Rovers etc etc.

Some terrible people drive BMWs, but that does not mean they are exclusively driven by knobs.

For the record, I drive a 16 year old BMW (so definitely old) and I drive it courteously, the same as I drive our Alfa or the MG.

I drive a 2001 E39 525d.

I cannot imagine ever driving it like a knob. It would be like trying to race around on a comfy old sofa.

2016 isn't old! My current BMWs date from 2005 and 2006.

IME post 2015 Audis and Mercs seem just as likely to be driven by knobs as BMWs - just depends on the monthly rental.

It’s mainly the underpowered models that are driven by knobs such as a 316i/ 325d.

The proper performance models like m3/m4 are generally driven okay. Always exceptions to this rule though.

As the grey haired owner of BMWs from 2005 and 2011, I reckon the worst BMW drivers are those with 4-cylinder cars with overlarge exhausts.

I assume you drive a BMW, takes one to know one
