992 camera recalibration
Discussion
Have tried Googling but can't find anything useful
Had my windscreen changed recently, but now had a letter from Autoglass telling me that my camera probably needs recalibrating
I have road sign recognition and matrix headlamps but not radar cruise or any lane change stuff
Has anyone else been here before? Am trying to work out whether I need it or not. Matrix headlamps are new to me so don't know if they link to the camera. Think they probably do, so recalibration therefore required
Thanks for any advice anyone can give

First Sea Lord - May I ask a question as I am too needing my windscreen replaced via Autoglass
When you say OEM replacement glass was that Pilkington with the Porsche logo on it or was it aftermarket glass approved accordingly? If so what brand was used? And did Autoglass fit it well and to a good standard?
Thank you!

Am not with the car at the moment, but should be able to check tomorrow. Was assured that it was OEM. Should be able to confirm tomorrow by looking for the logoWhen you say OEM replacement glass was that Pilkington with the Porsche logo on it or was it aftermarket glass approved accordingly? It was fitted at one of their centres, and took 2-3 hours. Looks OK to me, but haven't used it in the rain since it was done about a month ago
PS a shout's due for Glassman (above) who gave me some great advice when getting it all sorted. Wish I'd have been able to have him do the job

Thanks any info helpful
Glassman any thoughts appreciated please as insurer refusing to allow Autoglass to put in the Pilkington with Porsche logo in unless I pay a kings ransom……
I see many of the brands - used by BMW include Carlex, Fuyao (most of their X cars use this), Saint Gobain etc as I trawled round a BMW compound looking
I know Porsche in the main are Saint gobain but 992s are mostly Pilkington
Thank you!

Wouldn't the original be Saint Gobain?
A question for Glassman, is OEM the same as OE?
OEM is the terms for Original Equipment Manufacturer. This has been shortened to OE. Same thing. A question for Glassman, is OEM the same as OE?
Autoglass's sister company, a windscreen wholesaler, supplies them with glass. More and more people are insisting on OE (OEM) glass. The obvious issue there is margin.
Autoglass now refer to their non-genuine glass as OEE (Original Equipment Equivalent). Make of that what you will.

All depends on what you agreed to before policy inception. Your attention should have been drawn to any salient points of the proposal which would have allowed you to make an informed decision. For example, if the proposal stated that they may use secondhand parts for repair; or it may have stated that they use Company X for windscreen repairs (at that point you might have had a look at their online reviews and found that they have a bad reputation, or even asked the question on a car forum). Main OEMs for Porsche are Pilkington and Saint Gobain but when you look at say, an Audi Q3, don't be surprised to find three different manufacturers for the glass: one for the windscreen and heated rear; another for the drop glasses and a third for the quarter windows.
Thank you. Understand the insurance terms and conditions.
They are looking to put Fuyao glass in. Which is OEM for BMW on their X range cars.
Either that or pay 1500 quid for Pilkington.
As it is OEM on BMW (along with others) I am assuming it can’t be an entire crock of s@@t
Anything to look out for with the install?

Just checked. My 992 is Pilkington. I didn't see a Porsche logo but didn't look everywhere on the screen
It's a GT3 which has thin glass, which I think extends to the windscreen, so got the impression at the time that Autoglass didn't have much scope than to fit OEM (assuming mine is in fact OEM)

VW4 is the code for lightweight glass which is thinner. There's nothing on the glass to help you identify the glass although on some screens you can tell where it was manufactured, and when. For example, on the 'PILKINGTON' logo, there will be a dot around it somewhere. The position of this dot indicates the country. Some Porsche models have the dot above the L which means the glass was manufactured at the old SIGLA plant in Aken, Germany. Your estimate of it is understandable but don't be fooled by it. The only thing that is the same between aftermarket and genuine glass is the drop test. Quite often the two types go through different manufacturing processes. Some aren't even made at the same plant. They are looking to put Fuyao glass in. Which is OEM for BMW on their X range cars.

The 997 windscreen by Fuyao isn't a great fit. Most noticeable is the antennae wires which are much thicker than the originals made by Saint Gobain (which are very fine). The under-glass trim is also a slightly different profile.
Appreciate your Glassman
What is so annoying is that the glass isn’t chipped. It has a blemish - two tiny dots but in my swept vision. Autoglass are adamant they can’t make it better. Hence new windscreen.
Two MOT testers have told me it wouldn’t fail an MOT
It would be spotted at trade in time and they would try and take some money off the trade in price.
Would you leave it be or replace the screen?
