Retaining Private plate on Trade In

Hi There,

I'm currently in the process of trading a car into a Dealership that has a private plate on it. I wouldn't like to swap that to my new car immediately. I'd like to keep it on retention for now. When I look online I'm getting conflicting information. The dealership has offered to do this for me. Please, could someone tell me the correct procedure to do this?

Just to make sure the dealership isn't going to loose my plate...

Use the Dvla online service and put in on retention yourself.
Give the replacement certificate ( issued instantly ) to the dealer and let them plate accordingly.
When the replacement v5 arrives give to dealer.
Do the day before or so and a) inform the dealer this is what you are doing and b) just mention to insurers.
Drive to dealer and pick up new car etc.

Go online via DVLA and retain it

You'll be issued a code to allow you to purchase replacement plates and the retention cert will appear via post shortly after. You'll need to update your insurance too.

You'll need to wait for the new V5 to arrive before PX'ing unless your dealer says otherwise. This will take anything from 3 days to 6 weeks to arrive

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to do this over the last few years but it’s never taken more than a maximum of 10 days and that includes during Covid.
Usually it’s no more than a week.

Tbh it shouldn’t make the slightest difference.
I would still tell your insurers ( just in case) and as I said before hand make sure the dealer knows that when he picks your car up it will already be on retention and wearing the old plates.
