991.2 Steel disc how long last?
Discussion
Just had a service for the 911 targa 991.2 all fine save for reported from OPC that brake pads are at 75%used as are all discs. Car has done 34000miles non track relatively gentle last 16000 miles by me.
Was surprised that the discs needed changing?! pads I was expecteding. any thoughts?

34k on original discs and pads is pretty good going in my book, and at that mileage probably worth replacing both, I am sure a pretty competent person could replace themselves saving on astronomical OPC labour rates!
thanks - thats given me a good idea of a life span for them. Had a quote from the OPC and then an independent who was about £500 cheaper.was tempted to run them longer until the warning light came on Approx 90% but Im booking a Scandi driving tour with daughter for about 20 days and didnt want it coming on then.
Appreciate the replies. Yes I agree could be 6 to 12k miles left which will be within about 5 to 10mths of my normal driving but may accelerate it with the tour as will be doing about 3.5k
I've booked in with a porsche specialist to get them done in a week so saving a good chunk on the opc price.
Thanks for the pointers Gents.

They should use a digital vernier gauge to measure the brake disc and brake pad thickness. There is a minimum thickness stamped onto the brake disc. Ask for the numbersWas surprised that the discs needed changing?! pads I was expecteding. any thoughts?
Unless the wear is uneven, or they are heavily corroded or lipped, then there is no need to change them at 75% worn.
Just changed front discs on my 981 2012 PDK 44000 miles because I thought they looked bad. Paid 90 per disc from Autodoc. I think rust got to them more than wear or use. Also did pads on all 4 corners. Took me about 4 hours all in. Total cost less than 300. They always look bad when you get them off.

It's a tricky one - perhaps OPC is trying to advice the change now so you don't have to go back between services.
Also if discs go before the next set of pads do then you have to replace the whole lot.
Curious though, does anyone know at what mm or % wear the brake pads warning light come on & does this differ by model (911, Cayman/Boxster) etc?

You should never replace discs and keep the old pads. Unless you are seriously cutting corners.
That was my point... OPC may be recommending replacement pads for wear & discs due to age/initial rust.Realise this is speculative but it could be with there's a thought the discs will need replacing before any replacement pads wear out.

Yes Sometimes discs need replacing even if not worn. Usually due to condition. If you only drive your car gently and occasionally then the discs can get in a bad state.
