Not that I am scared of the dentist, but i have, in the last 6 weeks had my 6 monthly check up. Had to have a filling, which wasn't a problem, book an appointment for the filling. the following week the work was done. all OK so far.
48 hours later the filling falls out.. not very happy I return to the dentist to book another appointment to have ir re-filled. I then wait another 3 days to get in. to be told that I need a cown on that tooth. £90 for a Gold one or £260 for a white one.
I pick myself up off the floor after seeing the estimate & say I'll get back to them .
About 2 weeks later, ie beginning of this week, I go back to book an appointment to have the crown fitted.
They cant fit me in untill After my next 6 monthly check up. That's in December. :furious:
I told them they must be having a laugh, but, No, that's the best they could do.

What is happening to the NHS dentists, I know I'm lucky in having an NHS dentist, even though he's South African, along with the other dentists in the practice. They just seem to be taking the P**s. They know you can't go anywhere else so they have you by the "short & Curlies"

Also, why is it called a practice, havn't they got it right yet ?

You need to talk to peterpeter, he's a dentist, but I know what he'll say, NHS dentistry is utter shite, that's why dentists don't work in the NHS, because they have to use substandard materials, that they wouldn't use on a dog.

Have to use sub standard materials, yeah right....choose to you mean.
Can't remember the last time I saw a poor dentist, in the financial sense anyway.
And before you say anything, my wife used to work for the BMA underwriting their insurance policies, so I am speaking with a degree of insight.

I prefer the filling over dipping my hands in my pockets any day.

Sorry, but you might like to check your facts. The NHS only permits dentists to use certain materials and NO others. It's not upto the dentist what materials he can and can't use for NHS patients, they only budget for specific types.

How has the BMA got anything to do with dentists? Before you say anything, I am a Hospital doctor and my brother is a dentist.

i have to agree with one of the earlier posts:

the vast majority of dentists dont work on the NHS because it is not a favourable situation to be in. which is what can easily lead to very long waiting lists because there are so few NHS dentists.

i am only just going into my 2nd year of my dental degree but i already know that there is no way i am going to work in the NHS!

oh yeah: crowns are so expensive because you have to get someone else to make them for you!

Just out of interest, and somewhat off topic (Sorry), who pays for the 7 or so years of training prospective dentists undergo? If it's the taxpayer, shouldn't theu be obliged to work for the NHS for a while?

Kevin, I am a dentist and havbe been for 14 years.

Good dentists certainly dont want to use low grade materials....whats the point?

Patients will only end up coming back with problems.

Why should dentists be poor??Should we do it all for free??? Oh yes of course you paid 2 p a week National insurance....that entitles you to thousands of pounds of free care.

NHS dentists are Forced into using low grade materials or they will go out of business. Simple economics.

A dentist gets about £100 for a crown on the NHS.

A quality dental technician will charge a dentist about £200 for a private crown. The dentist will then charge on top for his time and to guarantee the work.

Therefore an NHS dentist need to use a lab that will make the crown cheaply so he can make some sort of profit. Usually NHS lab fees are around £40.

So the private crown in effect costs 5 times more from the lab than the NHS one.To make a crown that cheap, corners will be cut.

And as for your wife knowing about dental charges with her BMA connections.....what a load of crap.

They know all about dentistry and their insurance policies for dentistry are total crap anyway.

My sister-in-law's a dentist in Liverpool.

But I don't hold that against her

My dentist has started shifting everyone onto 9 month inspections, rather than 6 monthly ones. Probably so he can fit more illegal immigrants in.
Still, as long as he reserves the 'low-grade materials' for them, that's fine

I thought this so missed one - was busy with work and stuff too. I then found out that I had been taken off the NHS books and had to rejoin as a private patient! Beware!

you probably would have ended up going private anyway.

The new contract for dentists is a joke.

Expect them to leave in their droves. The govt will do the usual "blame the greedy dentists" when the plop hits the fan next year.

But it truly is the Govts fault. They are arseholes who only say and do anything for political posture.

monkey boy, from your description Id say you have been treated unfairly particularly with respect to being made to wait for the next appt. when it wasnt your fault.

Theres no excuse for that NHS or not.

I would ask to speak to the dentist, (be nice...not aggressive), and Im sure they will get you in.

Maybe I am just lucky but I have always had NHS dentists look after my teeth and apart from one who caused me to stop going for 6 years, until I had a tooth literally explode in my mouth, I can’t say I can fault their work.

I have ‘ropey’ teeth anyway and until I was 18 really didn’t look after them at all. As a result I lost count after about my 14th crown at the age of 28.

Only time other than above I’ve had a problem was when the tec. Lab. Give me someone else’s crown – cue very uncomfortable week followed by another temp. crown and another fitting – not fun.

For those of you who say don’t bother going to your check-ups, and please correct me if I’m wrong PP, DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

My dentist has a policy of removing you from his list if you haven’t been to see him in the last 12 months. Try getting an emergency appointment then when you do need one – you’ll wait for ever in pain of have to go private as a friend is finding out as we speak…

I've no problem with being private - healthcare covers the big stuff and I can just about manage to pay for the rest.

Actually since going private I'm sure the dentist is less painful - joking aside. This chap uses some kind of numbing 'gun' while my old one used a bloogy great needle which was about as thin as a snooker cue, and almost as long!

The taxpayer paid for me to become a computer scientist. Do you think I should have to work for GCHQ or something 'for a while'?
