INTERESTING QUESTION ALERT: hybrid Lexus vs diesel Volvo

Hi everyone. I am looking for advice and/or abuse about changing cars.
I currently have a 2010 Lexus RX450h which has done 115k. I’ve had it for two years/30k miles and it’s been great. However, with a change in circumstances meaning a drive of 500 miles to/from London more than once per month, and a decrease in other urban driving, I’m thinking about changing to something newer and - whisper it - diesel. The Lexus is averaging about 32ish mpg on that kind of run.
My budget is my Lexus plus about £3000, which leaves me somewhere about £10-11,500 at a guess.
My driving will be mainly motorway and other long distance journeys for the majority of my driving.. Comfort and especially reliability is a preference over speed or drive, as I am about to buy a motorbike to sate my craving for stupidity. I have a big stupid dog so I’m thinking that an estate should be my preference.
I’ve been looking at c.2016/2017 (EU6, King Khan friendly) Volvo V60s with the D4 engine and a manual gearbox. My budget gets me just about there to a D4 with around 60-70,000 miles. I’m attracted by the smaller size, £30 tax, cheaper insurance, and talk of up to 60mpg. The hallowed forums seem to disagree as to whether the VE4 D4 engine is great or whether it’s anthrax, so some advice on that would be appreciated.
Alternatively, is there something I’m missing? Or, am I just an idiot who should buy a 1992 Jaguar XJ12 and hang the consequences?

I agree. I did look at XC60s and I liked the look of them. I suppose what I’ve found is that I don’t need the size of the Lexus and to an extent I miss the feeling of being a bit lower to the ground? The appeal of changing for me is to get a significantly newer and hopefully fresher car which at the same time is cheaper to run. I was very happy to keep the Lexus but now my driving is significantly more motorway-biased, I can see the appeal of a car which is more economical and, more importantly, has a greater range.
Should also say that I’ve been looking at the F30 320d, as well as a quite cheap W212 E Class.

I’ve been driving a 2018 V60 D4 manual for the past 4 years and have done 65k to date. Not sure on road tax, insurance or service costs as it is a company car and it is all paid for.
My journeys can be anything from 30miles round trip to over 400.
Overall, very comfortable and enough space for all.
At 60mph average 56/58mpg, at 70mph average 53mpg, over 70, you are looking at mid 40’s.
Some owners have reported issues with electrical components, personally, the only problem experienced was with the infotainment which randomly went off or froze. Fixed by a system update from Volvo. 10min job.
Everything is controlled via the main screen, most people hate it but, I’ve found it to be good and easy to navigate. I would suggest upgrading to apple car play/android auto as it makes life even easier. Lots of safety gear as standard, impossible to crash.
The bad points (which are really not that bad):
On uneven road, the rear feels a bit loose and bouncy but you’ll not be loosing control.
Some wind and road noise coming through at motorway speeds. Turn the radio up, no more issues.
The fan is really loud!
Could do with more torque and a quicker gear change, when up and running there is enough speed. Can put into dynamic mode for a little bit more fun.
I’ve could only get the ‘poor man’ spec which doesn’t make the car that exciting to look at. Right colour and wheels will change that easily. For the interior, leather would be best, the cloths seats stains as soon as you drop a little bit of water in it.
I’ll be returning the car in Jan, wouldn’t mind another V60. To remain in the Volvo family, a V90 looks even better but, auto box seems very slow plus, recent models seems to have more issues. Would love a new shape XC90 but, out of budget unless they are high mileages.
Will probably end up with a different brand looking for a bit more grunt and fun factor.
XF seems good/better than the V60 but, not sure how reliable.

Just bought a facelift W212 E220 CDI for my work. I do 35k a year. So far over 3000miles I'm averaging 54mpg. I get mid 60s on the motorway and 40mpg around town. Really impressed so far and obviously it's really comfortable with a remarkably good sound system which helps the miles fly by.
I paid 10k with 48k on it. It's a saloon though. The estate will be more.
