Favourite Drummers
Discussion
I'm guessing there are a few drummers on here (I'm not one of them, just a muso) but I was prompted to start a thread on drummers after being blown away by the wonderful Piere Van Der Linden of Focus who I saw at Newcastle Sage last Friday. They were great but he runs the band, utterley mesmerising to watch and take in.
The guy is total powerhouse and 77 years old FFS!
He's a jazz drummer and naturally he's influenced by Buddy - but is he even known among you drummers?
My favourites (in addition to):
Mitch Mitchell
Chad Wackerman
Bill Bruford
Ginger Baker
Andy Ward
John 'Pugwash' Weathers
Gary Husband
have I missed any - Neil peart I guess but not really studied him as I was never really into Rush.
Phil Collins - honourable mention.

Some great drummers there. I'd add
Mike Portnoy
Manu Katche
Terry Williams (Man & Dire Straits)
Terry Bozzio
Alan White
Chester Thompson
And yes, Phil Collins is a brilliant drummer as early Genesis and Brand X testifies.
...Cinema Show being a case in point, ....and brilliant throughout all of Unorthodox BehaviourMike Portnoy

I've been using Neal Wilkinson for years. His CV is pretty impressive (some of the many, many: Van Morrison, James Morrison, Paul McCartney, Ray Charles, Annie Lennox, Joan Armatrading), but that's not why I use him, apart from being one of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet, he is the BEST sight reader in the UK.
I've posted these vids before, so my apols to those that have seen it. Just bear in mind he is reading this s
t.
First up. right hand is in 4/4.. rest of his limbs are in 5/4. This is mad.

Next... well, just check it out (one rehearsal then this)

Just going to leave this here:

I think Roger Tylor deserves a mention, his combination of drumming and singing in this performance is pretty impressive:

...but as for the best in the world at the moment, nobody gets close to:

Dennis Davis.
I went to see Roy Ayers at Ronnie Scotts, after the show, he was upstairs signing merch. I went along & couldn't be bothered with the crowd around him & noticed Roy's drummer sipping a beer on his own. I got chatting with him & it dawned on me he might have played on a record I owned where in the 12" mix, the artist calls for all the players drop out except for Dennis - 'DENNIS PLAYING BY HIMSELF, MAN!'
So I asked him - were you on Do I Do by Stevie Wonder, Dennis?
He was. I'd bumped into Stevie Wonder & as it turned out, David Bowie's long time studio drummer. That night lives in the memory. Lovely guy too.
