more power in the wet!!
Discussion
My M3 Evo seemed more powerful today in the rain, when I could get traction, and it was a noticable difference. I remember a couple of my older cars (escorts and viva magnums) being like this and thought it was my imagination but when I mentioned it to my ever knowing dad he said his old Yamaha was the same. He explained it as being the moisture in the air because water is made up of two highly flamable substances, Hydrogen and Oxygen. By combusting wet air it is making a bigger bang than just plain old dry air. Has anyone else noticed the power increase in the wet or even damp air??
i can kind of see what you think might be happening but surely that cant be it can it?
true water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen but it doesnt combust because you need to split the bond between the hydrogen and oxygen which would require temperatures of (something like) 5000 celcius!
am i wrong in thinking this?
i am interested tho.

the rain is not realy the cause but the rain causing the air to cool thus inceasing in Density. The denser the air the more you draw in the combustion chamber, the more air you can draw in the more fuel you can bring in. The bigger the Bang.
thats the simplist way to exsplain and its the same princible as a charge cooler or intercooler, the lower the air temp the more dense it is. thats also why hot air ballons go upwards.......chineys take smoke upwards...ect ect

...or better yet... CO2 as some rally teams used to do before they got busted.
CO2 injection? Or just using it externally as a coolant?
Coolant... used to use the fire extinguisher system... mental?!
I also heard a few little stories about the old Lancia Integrales, which had an "extra fire extinguisher" plumbed directly into the engine....after a while people figured out the extra fire extinguisher was actually full of nitrous, and they kinda had to stop.
may just be an old rally myth though.

I think it's an old racing myth as I have heard it about many different cars in all sorts of racing classes, not just rallying.
