Hi,
Early 93 Chin 430, LT77 box

Had the shift bush disintegrate on the way back from the MOT so now have a rather sloppy gear selection.
Have looked through old posts but whilst most replace the shift bush with the retaining circlip groove located under the car there is one post from edhorne that states the circlip was accessed from above i.e. the bush orientation was the other way up - this seems much the easier way round to do the bush replacement.

Naively to me, it seems that providing the bush is well located then it shouldn't matter too much which way up it is positioned?

Much appreciated if anyone could shed some more light on this 🙂
Thanks, Steve

Update on fitting the new shift bush.
I measured the ball location in the new bush and its pretty similar either way up so I went with fitting it with the circlip on the topside.
This proved to be very straightforward and initial gear shift tests are all good.
1) remove just inner section of centre console - only 2 screws at the back for my '93 Chim.
2) remove gear stick rubber gaiter - mine had been previously torn free and then been glued back.
3) remove gear stick shaft, I eased the springs outwards and past the gear stick pins. Put cloth around shaft base to catch the spring loaded pin whilst lifting the shaft.
4) no need to jack up car, just put some clean cardboard underneath gear selector area
5) tie an old button onto a piece of long string - a little heavy tombac button with a loop is ideal. Drop this through the cleaned gear selector hole, jiggle a bit until it drops onto cardboard, retrieve and untie button then thread on the bush with enclosed holed ball. Re-tie on button and from inside car pull the bush up into place. I didn't grease it yet.
6) whilst gently pulling up on the located bush/ball with the string, seat the circlip. Make sure it's properly seated - you'll be able to smoothly rotate it and the ball will become free to move. Tip: I ordered spares of the circlip as its easy to overstretch it.
7) grease up ball/bush & gear stick shaft base and refit console etc

et voilà
