Which saloon - good mpg but over 2l engine? - Page 1 - Car Buying

Our work pays more pence per mile if your engine size is over 2l.

Needs to be a salon up to 5 years old and probably leaning towards petrol.

330 is obvious choice but thought there might be something more interesting / different out there that I’ve overlooked.

Less than 2l only pays 3p a mile less so I suppose I could get a 2l but would rather 2l+

A BMW 330i has an engine smaller than 2 litres, it has a displacement of 1998 cc.

You want a BMW 340i

Just go for the lowest priced/ lowest depreciating one. A 1.6 tdi saloon Skoda that gives 70mpg or something.

Mileage allowances are awful nowadays.

The amount OP would save getting a cheap 1.6 tdi diesel skoda would be probably get spent on Injectors paperbag

5 year old E220d will be a W213 with a 1950cc engine. W212 and earlier were 2143cc but they were last produced in 2016.

A pre-facelift W205 C220d will be 2143cc - they were produced until 2018.

The Mercedes C220d is great for this kind of thing, 2.1L engine gets you into the next pence per mile bracket while still getting the same MPG as the sub 2L options.

Nice to drive and comfortable so long as you avoid the massive wheels on the AMG line, premium + spec will get you all the toys and lovely panoramic roof.

Do not buy a Mercedes diesel.

NoX sensors fail and replacement parts aren’t available.

Also the dealers all seem to be flesh oboes.

Lexus. Absolutely, unequivocally, Lexus.

GS or ES or IS all sold with the 2.5 litre hybrid, which is immensely reliable, and genuinely efficient unlike a lot of the PHEVs.

You might also find a Toyota Camry hybrid which is basically the same thing, not sure they sold many here though.

I looked at a Kia Stinger recently. I really, really wanted it.

Unfortunately I just couldn’t justify the comedy 1970s 6000 miles / 6 month service interval or the roughly £1500 a year it would cost for those services…..

I love a Lexus as much as the next man, but I don't think spending 25-large on one is the way to save a few pence on the mileage claims.

The 5-year age limit is the killer with current prices. I'd almost be tempted to just run an older car and not claim the miles, depending on how many miles were are talking about.

These figures might be slightly out, but not by much.

No wonder they offer a seven year warranty.

Seems expensive, I'm sure I remember Autocar saying 36 moths servicing could be bought for just over a grand? Warranty is pretty much cast iron going by my dad's experiences, not that he's needed to use it much, so perhaps it's better to pay a bit more for servicing? Is the servicing cost any more than say an m3 or the like?

I’m not saying don’t buy one, just go in with your eyes open.

If you think I am wrong about the servicing that’s up to you, but I was looking about a month ago, so my experience is recent.

I’m just trying to help the op with potential pitfalls on some of the cars mentioned (but only where I have first hand knowledge) not have arguments about how much it costs to service a Kia in comparison to a BMW M3.
