Radio 4’s Today program with the National Gallery are asking the public to vote for “The Greatest Painting in Britain”.

This morning they featured my favourite. Edouard Manet’s, A Bar at the Folies-Bergere

That's pretty good. I like the way the reflection of the bloke at the bar and the people sat down are represented through the mirror.
Blimey, I nearly sound like an art critic there.

Big bums were "in" in 1890.

I visited the National Gallery in Dublin a few weeks ago and was surprised to see Renoir's "Les Parapluies" on display. This has always been one of my favourite paintings and was pleasantly surprised to find that it is actually owned by the Dublin based Hugh Lane Gallery who have loaned it to the National Gallery for a short while.

Of course, that isn't in Britain so it doesn't really answer the original question. I really must make a visit to the British National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.

Bit of a Turner fan myself - he was the inspiration for the impressionist movement, and many of his paintings are the purest of impressionist interpretation. My personal favourite is "Norham castle at sunrise" -

Mine is this one... incredible precission and technique and a fair good deal of symbolism hidden in the picture:

you see all the scene with a mistery viewer reflected in the mirror, and the same viewer is reflected in the eyes of the little dog, the candle, the shoes and the fruit near the window all seem to signify themes around marriage, same with colours and position of all the characters

Nice.

Who is it by?

(I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to fine art).
