The frequency of postings on the Cerb forum appear to be drying up. It would be a shame to lose such an invaluable source of knowledge because of migration to other platforms etc.

So - trying to keep some interest here . . . here's a vid of the very first push of the button after a complete strip and rebuild (from 4.2 to 4.5). Anxious moments! It was last spring, but since it's that time of year again and I'm beginning to wake the sleeping beauty up - I thought I'd try to fire up some enthusiasm here.

And before anyone comments - the MIL light is on because I hadn't connected the air temp sensor :-)

Happy motoring.

Thanks. I was apprehensive about taking on the rebuild, but I'm really glad I did it. The engine now runs smoother than it's ever done in 18 years of ownership smile

well done on the rebuild and very well done for helping to keep these pages relevant.

I watch the Facebook pages but as I only use Facebook on my phone and only occasionally it is really of not much use to me, I am also fed up with teh endless ads of Facebook to the point of being on the verge of ditching it altogether.

The information available on these forums is so much better, I just wish more of the old owners still used it, such a wealth of knowledge on here.

The engine sounds sooooo smooth, well done!!

I too follow the FB posts, but it’s all too superficial for my liking.
This forum is of far more interest to me. Which is why I always try to provide input here, even though my experience is quite limited.

It is way easier to find out some vital info on the forum than on Facebook, that's why I keep a weekly check on what's happening. I haven't posted for a while mainly because most of the issues on my car are solved but when I search to solve a problem on the Cerb, I always find something that will help on here. Good to see some success stories too.

The search function within the Facebook groups isn't too bad. I check here and Facebook as I'll help where I can on both.

Your car was looking and sounding lovely up at STR8SIX on Monday, air on looked like it was being recharged?

Just a service ready for the warmer months?

Very cool. I love the timing bracket/indicator thing above the front pulley. I'll be making something similar myself.

Notaping,

Could I please ask if you undertook ALL the rebuild work yourself? Pretty hardcore cutting your own valve seats!

I am looking into a project Cerby. Mechanical and electrical issues do not usually worry me, but body work is one I can't do to a high enough standard.

Was all the rebuild info readily available? And also parts, any supply problems there?

Thanks.

mrniceguy - thanks. I used a DTI gauge to get TDC when I had the heads off and scribed a line for each bank. Unbolted the bracket a good 5 or 6 times and rotated the crank to check its accuracy. The marks line up every time. It's a 2 part bracket because I didn't have a piece of aluminium big enough to create a one piece, but works very nicely.

CaptiV8ted - Everything except installing the new liners. I sent the block to Powers for that. They took the old studs out, replaced the liners and decked the block. They are also very helpful with advice if you get into trouble. All the parts were supplied by Powers. There is an engine build manual on http://tvr-cerbera.co.uk/. Have a read through and you'll get some idea of the process. Then it's up to you how far you want to go. From my experience - I learned a hell of a lot and I'm really glad I did it myself - 'cause now I know the engine inside out smile

Hi,

Great job and very interesting that you tackled it yourself. How long did it take and did you find parts availability ok?

Yup, service and MOT, although their aircon machine wasn't working, so still no gas...

Lovely drive home...
Getting prepped ready for everything. Laon Historic at the end of May, Le Mans Classic, and lots of UK based stuff planned this year. Was supposed to be taking it to Antwerp last weekend but it wasn't ready in time. There's some great tunnels under the river... the underground carpark in the town center... biggrin

Thanks. It probably took me about 6 months, maybe longer, but because of Covid - I wasn't in any hurry. I wanted to replace the 4.2 liners, but they weren't available - hence upgrade to 4.5. No problem with any other part. All available from Powers.

Great, thats good to know. My car is currently awaiting a body-off chassis refurb, I'm hoping not to have to do anything to the engine but good to know its not too bad to work on or get parts.

The last engine I worked on was a 6 litre marine diesel (1930'd design) with a redline of 1500rpm, so pretty basic.

Love it, that looks beautifully made

As for the MIL, it almost never seems to come on in my car - didn't warn me that the lambdas were't functioning

I only became suspicious that something was wrong when I got less than 100 miles on half a tank, on a motorway run

Cheers. Perhaps I made it a bit more curvy that necessary since the only important bits are the 2 timing lines and the notch in the pulley - but hey . . .

The MIL light is hilarious when you read up what activates it. e.g one of the things the TVR info states is - it comes on if the air temp (or water temp) is out of range. The range is listed as -30 to 130 C. Air temp - what planet? Water temp - I think your engine's already gone bang. Admittedly it also comes on for o/c which is more useful. For Lambdas it says the MIL only comes on if the voltage rises above 1.7V So if they're knackered and not giving any reading - it doesn't seem to matter. As in your case. Brill..

Well played OP, lovely stuff, just what I love seeing on here.

This forum is genuinely priceless to me, it's slow because most problems have been solved by previous threads, being good at searching means no need for lots of new posts. PH is indexed brilliantly on google.

I look in every few days, and I'm sure others do too smile
