I've currently got a Renault Grand Scenic, it's 10 years old and has done 57,000 miles. I'd like to change it for something more luxurious and a bigger boot but am having problems deciding. We have 3 boys, a 14 year old, 12 year old and 9 year old who is bigger than the normal sized 12 year old and a large male rough collie (part American so he's bigger than average).
Budget is £20k to £26k
I was looking at Ford S Max, Volvo V90, Citroen Grand C4 (not keen), Mercedes E Class estate, BMW gran tourer.

Are the E Class estates unreliable? Baring in mind that the 14 year old rarely comes in the car these days, just on the odd day out/holiday do we still need 3 full size seats?
Car is mainly used for driving to dog shows and shoppping and yearly holiday, we tend to walk the school run. Really wanted a petrol but they are rather thin on the ground at the moment.

Big cup holders, electric boot, climate control and leather seats would be great.

I'd suggest you would want a decent size SUV rather than estate car, the rear headroom and boot space advantage is vry handy.

The Touareg is good value and your budget would get you into a 2018/19 3.0V6 TDi with lots of kit and low mileage.

As someone with a 15yo, 13yo and a 9yo I’ve been through this conundrum a few times.

Two things to consider:

One, how tall you all are, esp as the main driver as this will determine rear legroom. Cars such as the mid-size SUVs (Tiguan etc) don’t do this well, and other seemingly big estates might be smaller in the back than you think.

Second, rear bench width and set out. Many will be formatted at a 2 seater with a token seat in the middle. Lower spec cars tend to have more usable benches as the higher spec often includes some form of sporty rear seating - ffs!

You might find X3, Tiguan, and many others fail on both of these - I did - which leaves the next class up - X5, whatever Merc SUV, Toureag, that type of thing.

My (UK available) list came down to E Class wagon, X5, lower spec Cayenne, and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Superb wagon was missed out as it’s completely dull to drive, though it is big.

One other to consider is the Subaru Outback - latest are v big inside - I didn’t as it only comes with the 2.5 boxer and CVT - but if Subaru had put the WRX running gear in and called it Liberty GT, I’d have been all over it.

I’ve gone with a large wagon that’s not generally found in the UK, and it’s just about perfect - plenty of space for 3 adults on the rear bench and a boot that’s bigger than an E Class or a Superb. That bits not too helpful, but hopefully the rest is!
