I absolutly hate those crappy tinny in the ear jobs. Why the hell do they even bother packaging them in the box. I'd rather have a tenner off the list price.

Any recommendations <£100 anyone?

Depends on what you want them for, I bought some Sony MDR V700DJ pro DJ cans for use with my iPods when flying, being DJ cans they are designed to be worn for long periods and can be swung out of the way when the cabin crew come along to offer you chickenfish or salad. They also fold up quite small for full size headphones.

They have done approaching 100000 miles with me now and sound great.

Etymotics ER6 or ER6i's. Depends on what your listening to and what your preferences are.

Yep got some for my iPod - they are amazing, sound is superb & earphones block out any external sound...

Would definitely recommend them!

Seconded, I use these with iPods (various models) and they sound pretty good.

I'd prefer to avoid etymotic type things as having all external sounds blocked out is fairly dangerous walking around busy streets (e.g. the City at rush hour).

The earphones supplied with iPods are actually half decent for essentially-free kit, but there's the white cable 'I've got an iPod in my pocket' risk. Not that having Bang & Olufsen written on your earphones is much better but not quite as obvious to the idiot thief.

I'd love to wire up some iPod headphones to a pound of C4 and walk the streets. Do you feel lucky punk?

Try

www.pjbox.co.uk

for price comparisons.

I have some Shure E2c canal phones which are great for the current price of about £60 (They were £90 last year.)

The E3c's may be even better at a little over a hundred. I have not tried them.

I also have Etymotic ER4-P's which are excellent but creeping up the price range at just over £170 (They were about £270 last year). Can wear them for hours at a time though and cut out 99% of external sounds. Then take them out and hear normally no matter how loud you thought you had the volume set. Excellent.

I believe that some people think they can get better but you have to be spending huge amounts to get there!

Not sure I understand the question... what do you mean?

All earplugs have small speakers in them and earplugs that are large enough to be heard from a distance away and don't fit in your ear are called speakers

Bought a pair of Sony MDR-EX81SL phones in duty free the other week. Now in-the-ear ones I detest normally, the fall out as soon as I turn my head or cough, and no bass at all. Much prefer a pair of Grados.

However, these are fantastic - they hook around your ear so they don't come off, and a rubber diaphragm seals your ear canal so you get a fantastic sound, good bass, and not too much outside intrusion. Build quality is great, and at 30 nicker you can afford another pair if you sit on them. You won't regret buying a pair of these.

Thirded! These were also in the film "Minority Report" near the end of the film, one of these doubled up as a mobile phone earpiece used by the bad guy.

I also have a pair of Sony in the ear types for when I'm on my bike, but since I changed the cans for race cans, they are not loud enough

I got some Shure E4c's a few weeks ago, and they're stunning. As they should be at £160.

I used these people - ordered by email at 4pm and they were deliverd to the office at 10am the following morning. www.advancedmp3players.co.uk

The STAX I mentioned earlier seem to "bung" right into your ears. At £250 they might br considered a bit expensive tho!
