Might get my knuckles rapped for this but posting anyway...

Buyers Beware!! (bit of a read but photos are at the bottom)

Noticed that my old Subaru Forester STI has reappeared on eBay after it was written off around March last year. Was originally going to let things slide but the chap selling it has advertised it with photos with my private reg on the car. The plate is now on another FSTI with no accident damage which means anyone doing checks on the car might look up the wrong vehicle so not know the car advertised has been previously written off. The actual reg is WD56 PNL or WD56PNL (not AJI 6 AJI6 AJ16 or AJ 16)

Other things that have bugged me is that the seller’s description isn’t very truthful:
  • “300+bhp” the car was never tuned so won’t be over 300bhp…
  • “Just had new disc and pads genuine on the front” the passenger side front disc wasn’t attached to the car the last time I saw it!
  • “a completely solid car” actually the driver’s door and wing were battered in the accident along with the wheels, hubs and linkages. Passenger's side wing was also damaged during recovery of the car and whilst it was auctioned by IAA UK.
  • “wheels have just been refurbished powder coated” actually both front wheel were smacked into, one by the BMW that crashed into the car when it was parked and then passenger’s side into a kerb with enough force to smash the hub into pieces…I wouldn’t be driving it on that wheel!
  • “the drivers side wheel bearing could do with replacing (just slightly noisy but its 16 years old it’s expected and a cheap fix)” no wonder it’s noisy after having a car crash into that wheel!
  • “perfect investment vehicle” a previously crashed car is perhaps not a good investment
On a positive note what I will say is that prior to the crash it was a great example and had very low miles but buyers should be aware that simply, and sadly, this isn’t the case anymore.

I did reach out to the seller asking him to remove photos with my private reg on display, he hasn’t done this and suggested all the work to repair the car was “done in a day”. Again not sure about that given the body work and paint required.

If anyone does buy it I have a spare key and fob that may or may not work along with some bits of paperwork which I would be happy to post.

Obviously I'm only posting this because I would hate to buy a car without knowing these details and we should be looking out for the community so hopefully the record of the history of this vehicle can remain here for future reference!

Giving away paperwork and spare keys for someone elses car there pride an joy is a criminal offence you shouldn’t be in your possession of these they should be returned to the rightful owner that is not a cool move !!!!!!!!!
And wether you like it or not cars are made to be fixed ive owned plenty of repaired cars in my time with zero issues
Eh? None of that is a criminal offence.

Does anybody have a link to the car, was it cat n / s and is that being disclosed - really dislike scummy traders not disclosing write off status.

I'm guessing this is Adam who is selling this car?

I have no issues with knowingly selling/buying repaired vehicles. The issue is actively avoiding a cars history when selling it at a higher price worthy of a car without previous damage.

I didnt read it as that, i read it that he'd got service paperwork and some old keys. Entirely his decision as to whether to destroy that history and keys, sell it to you, or give it to you if asked nicely. presumably if it was a total loss it wasn't sold directly.

I can understand he's more likely to offer relevant paperwork and an old key if asked politely, costs are covered and he's not threatened with being a supposed criminal on here. Equally he might rather not share paperwork if its being used to misrepresent a written off car.

Adam, I never proposed giving the keys away to some random person. Happy to post to whoever buys it.

Perhaps the way out of this would be to advertise the car on the correct number plates (not my private reg) with a truthful description?

That's a nice photo of Andrew, not quite nice enough to distract from the somewhat misleading advert text though. I hope you're not trying to pass it off as some kind of "sold as seen" sale without being forthcoming about the extent of the repair. The lines about "just had the wheels power coated!" certainly seem phrased in such a way as to minimise the perception of quite how many of the things listed were as a result of the accident and how many were because you felt you wanted to do general maintenance. You're certainly right about the freely advertising of the spare key being unwise though, there are definitely some dishonest individuals about.

Many thanks, sorry for the hassle!

Although I think the seller's response to this thread was good enough reason for me to make it in the first place. Attempting personal attacks rather than deal with actual issue of selling a car with a dodgy description...

He's also tried to contact me on various other social accounts. Along with the old work number apparently!

Adam - I'm not going to reply on them, only on here. Just advertise the car truthfully next time and we can all be friends!

Thanks, I wore it on a birthday one year while karting in the streets of Tokyo so technically it's my birthday suit!

DVLA website is still listing it attached to a blue Forester so maybe worth following up with DVLA, unless you stuck it on another one, in which case I'll get me coat smile

Trying to work out the problem. Most of the "issues" listed will have been repaired. Damage looks trivial to me, probably written off as to spares availability & rarity.

Personally I can't speak to the quality of the repair, having not seen the listing first hand, I don't know if this is a home garage repair or a professional bodyshop with guaranteed workmanship (that A pilar certainly looked like a bit of an awkward repair). Irrespective, the part I found "off" was where the advert doesn't even mention that it's an accident repaired vehicle, and that they seem to be pointing to new parts and refurbs as incidental rather than having to be done to make it roadworthy again. I appreciate "caveat emptor" is a thing, but even so, some transparency on part of the seller shouldn't have been unexpected.
