My OH got me a car experience voucher for Christmas and the list of cars included the Fast & Furious Supra, so I booked it without particularly high hopes.

The day arrived and to my amazement it was a manual twin turbo. The instructor was great and basically left me to it after the first lap when he had assessed that I was a sensible bloke who has done a bit of circuit driving.

I’ve no idea what power it was running but I’d estimate in the 400s.

What I found so interesting was the sequential turbos, it moved along ok in third then whack the second turbo comes in (apparently 4,000 rpm, the rev counter and speedo didn’t work…) and it’s like you have been rear ended it takes off again so aggressively. The noise of the 2JZ and the manual gearbox made it amazing to drive.

It also steered surprisingly well with really nice feel and a pointy front end.

Honestly, it’s one of the most exciting cars I’ve ever driven. I was blown away by it. I totally get why people obsess over 90s Jap cars now.

Their flaws like a huge amount of boost coming in really hard at 4,000 that would definitely have overwhelmed the tyres if it wasn’t dry makes them less easy to drive than a modern turbo car with almost completely linear power, but that is what creates the excitement!

It is a shame I can’t justify £50k at my time of life because if I was 20 years older with a fully paid up house and no nursery fees, I’d have one in the garage by the end of the month!

The sequential turbo system is a joy, can have issues but its great, later model Supras had the VVTI engine so you get a big lump of low down torque to start and a nice shove at 4k when the 2nd turbo comes online.

People seem obsessed with putting big turbos on them but to me you lose than nice, low end shove.
