Oh dear.... idiotic stealer....
Discussion
After a bit of hunting on the Schminternet over the weekend I've managed to update wifeys X5 comms system to the latest software.
Sadly my Mk3 in the M5 is a little more complicated, so I thought I'd give my local dealer the benefit of the doubt and ask them to do it. Firstly they tried to claim such things didn't exist, and then when pressed, admitted that they could do it but I'd need to book the car in as, "these updates take three or four hours don't you know..."
Needless to say, I declined to book my car in with them! The update on the X5 took, if I count twice.... or backwards.... erm.... all of five minutes?!
Do they just assume we're all idiots, or are they blithely hoping we are???!!!

On an 02 car she'll have the later 16:9 widescreen display. The software updates seem to add better and quicker routing on the sat-nav, split screen options and the odd bug fix for smoother running.
Have a look a www.bmwnav.com - there's a run down of the different software version on there and it shows you how to check which one yours is.

High Redleicester, the E60 5 series model has a totally different set up software wise to the X5, coding updates involve updating the complete car so that all the control units have compatible software to talk to each other this can take anything between 3 hours and 12 hours, we always book cars in for overnight coding/programming, if the sat nav requires updating the coding machine prompts you to insert the latest update disc, but this cannot be done on its own without a total programme/coding procedure, the same applies to new 7's, 3's and 1 series.
And if you think thats pants imagine how we feel if at the end it says coded with errors we have to start again.

hi there
I have E39 M5 with Mk III Sat Nav. This is the widescreen version. There is a code on the Top RHD side of the setup screeen which tells you the version.
I upgraded mine to get the split screen Navigation, and also becasue I could never get the TMC to work. the upgrade to firmware plus a later TMC encoded CD sorted it all out. TMC is great and works very well
