I did have a big claim last year. I did most of it online, and spoke to them briefly once or twice.
By coincidence - I also spoke to them yesterday to change the address on my cars. I don't think it was any different to any other company, and perfectly quick.
Perhaps I was just lucky.

Almost all the 'premium' brokers are charging 1% value + fees, NFU, Chubb, Pace Ward, Lockton's etc. So £2,500 for a £250k car. They don't appear to load premiums for point's and previous accidents though so if you have lots of points and claims they can be competitive.
The only reasonable way to go is Admiral, however even their premiums have up to doubled within the M25 in the past year due to having to cover the costs of the 5,000+ Range Rovers stolen in London in the past 12 months. If you are outside the M25 the increase was much less. Even at double their premiums Admiral are still a lot lower than the other usual suspects above. Also I find Admiral very easy to deal with, even for claims, only ever max 10 mins on hold. NFU have an instant response and don't charge for plate changes and admin etc. but is that worth a hefty £1.5k+ premium over Admiral? Also excess with the premium brokers, in London postcodes, £5k+ Admiral around £1k.

Ive been with Specialist Insurance Services with my F430 and it's been very reasonable for what I consider to be an accessional policy. Oddly my 1987 turbo bodied 911 cost lots more, and my new 458 was 100s more than anyone else.
I have had 6 points up until recently and they are all gone this year, but I have ditched them as way too expensive and now with Classic Line for all. It's not the same all don't care whatever policy but it works. I cycle to work so will never drive any to the office and so in reality it doesn't actually matter, the drop in amazing cover the SIS offer.
Admiral don't do agreed value insurance which is arguably needed if you have a high value relatively low volume car. The difference between what an insurance company will deem to be market value and what you consider to be value could be huge in the event of a total loss claim. I would use them to insure my more mainstream cars but not my Lambo.

They paid out very fairly on my McLaren total loss last year - if anything, higher than I expected. It allowed me to replace the car. Obviously without agreed value, that might not always be the case - but I was pleasantly surprised.Edited by davek_964 on Monday 6th March 17:20

At potentially a £2k delta, are you really going to actually be short changed when all is said and done?I'm not so sure, but a total loss is a small future risk vs the immediate known (massive) cost of the "specialist" policies.
A shade over £800 with Admiral for me this year - quite happy with that vs the alternatives. Hopefully I don't come to need it
