E46 bootlid wiring

I'm sure I'm not the first person to have this problem, but the wires between the body and the boot lid of my 2001 E46 convertible keep breaking. I have repaired the individual broken wires with solder and shrinkwrap and tape so many times that there is now more solder than wiring and the loom is getting very inflexible. I've seen a repair section from Germany on ebay, but they said it's for the coupe, not for the convertible (what is the difference?). Getting inside the body for one end, and stripping the boot lid trim at the other end in order to splice in a new section looks like a lot of work. I'm wondering what other people have done?
