We live in the middle house of terraces, 30m West of London.

Each of the gardens are slightly larger then the space required for a double garage.

3 months ago, some new neighbours moved in to the house next door but one with a puppy - a frappin' husky at that!

From day one, the dog has constantly howled whenever the owners are out.

Often, they leave on a Monday morning at 5:45 so we're woken then and kept awake for an hour.

After 3 sets of neighbours complained to the council, they made an effort to get the dog trained. We were all asked to keep a log.

The elderly neighbours now don't want to get involved.

I am generally away on business during work hours, but whenever I am working from home, i.e. when the owners are away as well the dog goes mad, so the log I have kept is empty for ages, then when I'm home (which is rare) there are entries.

... any advise?!!! Please?!!!!

Why don't you ask the elderly neighbours to keep a log on your behalf under the promise that you will not get them involved.

Have you spoken again with the dog owners? They tried to train the dog but clearly don't understand that the dogs behaviour is caused by anxiety, ie being left alone. Being a pack animal it should have company.

They need to do a lot more training to correct this behaviour or let a more suitable owner have the dog. You shouldn't have to put up with it.

The neighbours are at their wits end, but eldery and don't want to be responsible for the problem owners being evicted / losing their dog so are unwilling to submit logs. They have made no bones about informing the neighbours what a problem the dog is so they are aware of the issue, but not doing much about it.

Dogs should not be left alone all day howling. If the dog is howling its because its in (emotional) distress.

The owners need to take action: perhaps Gaz's suggestions will work. If not I'm afraid they need to arrange for the dog to visit someone during the working day...or they need to get a second dog to act as a companion. Whatever - its their problem.

In your position I would communicate with them to give them a chance. Probably a note - but better if you can start with it face to face.

Let them know their dog is in distress whilst they are out. Hopefully this will be more than enough for them to take action.

If they do nothing then its time for the RSPCA. You're doing the kindest thing for the dog.

Kinda agree Don.
It is not for me to decide who has what kind of dog and how it is kept, but I can't help but think
.... a HUSKY? left alone in a small garden ... can't be right!

I can imagine a dog like a husky is not at all suitable as a house bound pet really - especially left at home all day. Its not a cat !

If i'm thinking correctly don't those dogs require a shedloads of excercise (used to pulling sledges all day) and mental stimulation to keep them happy !? Its probably going out of its mind from boredom and excess energy !

Maybe the RSPCA is the best thing for the dog long term. At least get them to have a word with the owners on keeping the hound content.

I can assure you they are in no doubt about the situation.

Their only responce is "We've got to work"

RSPCA it is, then. Having to work is insufficient excuse for cruelty, in my opinion.

have you tried video taping the dog as it is in the garden howling, might be worth showing them the distress it is under while they are not there.

of course they have to work but they dont have to cause the animal distress and thats all the howling is.

OK. Want to hear the other side of the story?

That was my side / rant.

I just put a (relativly polite / strongly worded) note through the letter box earlier, saying that we need to talk about the dog.

The guy came around again, as far as they were concerned the problem had gone away as no one had complained to them. They've taken advise about the dog and the garden is fine for it.
Now they know there is a problem, again, they will bring the trainer around again, apparently they have a lifetime support thing going with the dog and the trainer.

He said that he was pissed off with hearing my engine reving :O ... I thought back as I couldn't recall being overly noisy but then remembered that I was doing a noise test, then a week later doing a coolant test ... so I stuck my neck in and said, fair cop.

Left on friendly (ish ..) terms.

Yep, Huskies are pack animals, it is howling because it doesn't like being left alone...

The owners are A) Stupid or B) Selfish for having this dog in a tiny garden and left alone all day.

They could get a "barking Collar" which sprays the dog in the nose with horrible stuff when it barks, but quite honestly this one will continue to bark and put up with the smell I think.

You can always sue them for nuisance, and I can assure you that barking dogs are one of the main bones of contention between neighbours (I'll get me coat)..

If it's a husky then leaving it home alone is wrong, they need company.

RSPCA can't do anything, if the dog has adequate shelter and water, that's not defined as cruelty (friend is an inspector)

As for what to do, sorry can't help

I absolutely adore dogs - but don't have one coz I have to go to work and think it's wrong to leave them alone.

For yours and the dogs sanity get something done.

RSPCA are concerned about the dog, the dog is fine, they wont want to know.

What you need to do, for the next 14 days is keep an exact diary of when the dog starts barking and how long it barks for. This has to be to the minute and if it happens 10 times a day then you should make 10 entries.

Then you call the Environment Health Noise Abatement Department

They will tell you to keep a diary for 14 days.

Which you have already done, then the circus really starts. They will see the dog owners and inform them a nuisance has been reported, hopefully an amicable solution will be reached.

You could get a greyhound walk in the morning, and it'll happily kip for the 8 hours you're at work
