What are peoples views on this? Can a good repair last or will the wheel always be compromised?

Depends so much on the wheel, and damage, it's hard to say surely.

I had a mild egg in the mrs fiesta knocked out for £50, but I wouldn't do the same for a high performance magnesium thin wall alloy.

As above, very dependent on the wheel & the damage.

I have even done it myself on 2 lightly buckled wheels myself & they lasted/are lasting just fine.

I've had bent alloys straightened. The people doing it should tell you whether your wheel can be straightened safely. Obviously they will need to see it.
