When will lower trade in prices mean lower sales prices?
Discussion
I’ve been looking at Audi e-trons and have been tracking the values on both Autotrader and motorway/Cazoo/WBAC etc. It looks like since the beginning of Feb, the price you’d get for a trade-in has absolutely plummeted, one I was tracking went from £33k at the end of January to £27k yesterday.
On the last 3 cars I’ve bought (one in 2020, 2021 and 2022), I’ve not paid more than 15% above motorway prices on the day I pulled the trigger. Electric cars seem to have massive gaps - one e-tron I’m following is listed at £45k at a vauxhall dealer, and the highest trade in price is £31k at motorway (45% markup). On the other hand, a Lexus NX I was looking at is listed for 51k at a Lexus dealer and has a Motorway price of 46k (11% markup)
Anyway, when do you think these lower trade prices will be passed on to consumers? I haven’t driven the e-tron at the vauxhall dealer, but spec wise it’s perfect - I just don’t want to be paying massively over the odds and getting completely screwed if I have to dispose of it quickly in a few months.

My local Skoda dealer has had a large number of used e-trons lately, all around the £30,000 mark. Not sure on the spec etc, I just notice them as I walk the dog.
I'm not sure where they're getting them from but they shift plenty judging from the ever changing cars on the forecourt.
They've also got a few delivery mile Enyaqs too.
It's Meadens in the new forest if you're interested.

My view is that, for electric cars, we’re in the middle of an adjustment in values because of multiple factors - and that variations between trade and retail prices such as these will be normal until the market stabilises. Once this process is more settled, I think we will see greater predictability in depreciation and valuations for EVs… meaning that a car bought at an adjusted price shouldn’t prove to be unfortunate in the way one bought during the peak of values last year would be now. Beware that this view was called “nonsense” on another thread, though.

Two dealers I do a bit for have both said enquires have been very low for a few weeks now.
WBAC bids are down.
Dealers can't hold on to over priced stock forever.
Are new car price discounts starting to come back now? Seen a few on autotrader.
.
I received an "invitation" yesterday from Lloyds BMW stating they have a promotion event coming first weekend of March where there will be special offers on new and used cars, it doesn't elaborate what the deals will be but it's the first time i've received this type of promotion in quite a while. WBAC bids are down.

I’d actually seen a few from there! I think they’re mainly 50 (smaller battery/slower) Techniks (entry level trim) - those ones definitely seem to be a bit more reasonably priced, all of the higher trim stuff is madness thoughI'm not sure where they're getting them from but they shift plenty judging from the ever changing cars on the forecourt.

If car dealers are anything like my DiL business they will be using the increased margins to pay for their leccy bills, not passing it on to their customers.
Fair but it just seems they’re putting these crazy margins on electric cars - even at the place selling the e-tron they’ve got some other stuff up for 15% above motorwayGassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
