SL65 AMG vs chim 4.5
Discussion
Came up against one of these on my way back from the RS National Day at Donnington (where Roop and myself came 2nd in the concourse with his RS 500 :) )
I thought these were meant to be blisteringly quick - well he was round corners - my excuse is new tyres that are still slippy, but on the Traffic light GP's, he couldnt beat me..!
Surely he was a)not trying that hard b)too much power to get down c)crap driver or IMO c)Miss Daisy and I were a better combination.
So just how quick are the SL65 AMG's?

PS..he gave me the thumbs up when he turned off. I am playing with the big boys now. :D

So far, I've had the thumbs up from two very fast Porker boys (goodness knows which models, sorry
), a Scooby chap, a Golf GTi full to overflowing with young boy racers and an appreciative wave from an Aston man. Usually it's just a

SL65AMGs are ballistic. In a straight line over 100mph, they are quicker than standard p.....e turbos.

To be honest mate, with over 700 lb ft of torque they bloody well should be. Incidentally, I heard the motor was restricted by the torque rating of the transmission... do you know what the motor would produce in a 'normal' state of tune (as opposed to detuned)?
I still dont get how I could beat him off the line then to the next set of lights (princess parkway in Machester for those that know it).
Thats when I got the first thumbs up. He must have
ed up judging by those figures surely? or is my Chim just blistering off the line? never having had something worthy to play against I was surprised and pleased.

Well apart from the auto vs manual... perhaps he'd eaten too many pies? The SL65 weighs around 2070 kg kerb IIRC, whereas the Chim must be around 1100 tops. That's a difference of approximately 13.8 cyberfaces. Off the line that's going to be a *big* factor.

Out of curiosity where does that list come from? Is there any significance to the cars on/not on it?

Don't know, although when at the AMG engine factory back in April, they mentioned that the power output was restricted due to the transmission/drivetrain. They also mentioned the alloys were special lightweight ones built specifically to cope with the power of the restricted 65 twin turbo engine. Other items learnt was that a derestricted factory option was available which involved reprogramming and having enhanced engine cooling bits fitted, although even having had this done, you'd still be restricted to 187mph due to the tyres.
I know of one tuner who can totally disable the speed restricter and boost BHP from 612 to 650bhp.

Perhaps he was doing what I do these (licence worrying) days - backing off once it got to points totting speeds?
Yes, I can relate to that train of thought, I do that nowadays, get to 70-85 and thats enough, happened again last night, got to 70 (on a twisty 60 limit road) and backed off, but a white XR3i (!!!!) was hell bent in overtaking, no matter what the consequences, so I just let the little fella get on with it

Exactly - I bet he goes on to his fastfordxr3iturboburberry.com forum and brags about 'taking' a TVR.
