E82 Bonnet Release problems

Hi All
Had an ongoing problem with this for a while now after i thought i had resolved it. I know with this model its quite common for the cables to stretch causing the bonnet release to not work.
With mine there appears to if anything too much tension in the cables. When i connect it up in the small plastic box, the bonnet latch stays open. So unless the front cable has shrunk im not sure whats going on here. Ive tried spraying the actual latch with white lithium grease but with no joy. Lots recommend to replace the front cable when these problems arise but im not convinced that would help. Could it be possible the spring mechanism is on its way out on the latch itself?
