Any thoughts up to £100k. What do people think will go up in value the most by 2030? Allowing for running costs too…

Is it a Porsche or something else?

Sorry to be boring, but it's typically a decent wealth manager. Currently we're on a high, price wise, but almost every time I've run the numbers (not even including costs of storage or servicing) on the various classics that pop up on here, we'd have been down against investments had we bought the car in question when it was new/nearly new.

Exceptions apply, but they're mega rare.

Buy something you love and enjoy it. If you make money, brill, if you don't but you enjoy it then you're living your life properly.

This is it. Buy a car, store it (for a price). Service, insure run, tax and maintain.

Cars really are a pretty bad investment.

We can tell you in 2030 but until then nobody knows at all but I would warn that a 100k car as an investment is a very risky option. Better off taking a 25k punt on something and properly investing 75k in more measured investments…the 25k can be the risk opportunity or the affordable (Ish) loss. Unless you have £10m to invest and want to punt 100k of it.

Not 100k, but the SF90 at 350k seems a very prospect on a million by 2030. I think the blend of old v new, it seems very under valued price wise.

Always thought 70k was conspicuously cheap for a V12 Vantage manual and likewise 60k seems a bit of a steal for a R8 V10 Manual.

That was a couple of years ago so wouldn't surprise me if they're already more than that.

Lister LFT-666 at 70k, nearly half price from new.

I think it all depends if electric cars take over and more rules against ice cars.

Many years ago when all the super cars were shooting up in value Dad had just sold a building and thought about buying 3 new XJ220s which had just been announced

Luckily he didn't as they tanked in value

I believe they are now worth a decent amount but you'd have had to held your nerve for many years whilst they were going down

It's always easy with the benefit of hindsight

When I bought my civic in 2010 it was weirdly from a supercar garage they had Ferraris and Porsches but also in the corner a XJ220 with 1,800 miles for £95k.

I told my dad and grandad to go halves and buy it but no.

They didn’t

£400k+ now.

No denying that prices have risen madly but I would say that is more a sign that they won’t continue than they will…on the whole. The bulls and bears make money the pigs and sheep get slaughtered. That said…don’t follow me as I sold my E30 cecotto for 7.8k, my 993 for 21k and my 3.2 for 17.5k.

I've just Googled because I recall my Dad had £1M

Whilst they were supposed to be £290k some were sold for £485k (as the price was index linked) so regardless, even now you'd still have lost a huge amount of money, taking inflation into account

At the time it was considered a good investment !

why dont you invest in my company and I will pay you a £15k dividend each year until 2030 ? far less risky than buying a car

Will you then return the capital in 2030?

Honestly I think this is a tricky one.

The 'easiest' way to make money on a car is to buy it as a "used car", so it's cheap, and then later you sell it as a "classic car", so it's highly valuable.

That means looking for cars c. 10-20 years old, so approaching the end of being 'used' and with the potential to move into 'classic' status within a reasonable (5-10 year) length of ownership.

So we're looking for cars say 2000-2010. It probably wants to be one of the 'naturally aspirated hero' cars, since there were lots of N/A performance cars in that era which have been replaced by turbo ones.

The problem is that all the really likely cars are already above the £100k budget. Some grossly, like the Enzo, Carrera GT and LFA; some by "just" a few tens of thousands, like the Ferrari 458 and Mercedes SLS - these latter two in particular feel like decent bets to me. The newer Ferrari F12 is equally irritatingly a bit over budget.

So around the £100k mark I'd be thinking
Lamborghini Gallardo in a bright colour (yellow, orange, green)
Ferrari 599

less confident:
Aston Martin Vanquish in dark blue, green or grey
Ferrari FF ditto

I was actually browsing in this area, not specifically for an investment but just for something I wanted to drive. However none of the cars in this budget and the 'soon-to-be-classic' period really pulled me in, so I ended up going newer. I wouldn't buy a car as an investment unless it also attracted me as something to drive, hence would have difficulty picking a car here.

The other option would be to look cheaper
BMW M6 V10
Merc C63 6.2
Nissan GT-R
Audi R8

the issue is that these cars are much more numerous, so you may have to wait longer than 2030 for them to appreciate significantly. But I guess they will go up in value to some extent at some point.

You could also bet on cars that have already gone up to go up further, but that feels somehow less predictable to me, more along the lines of the 'greater fool' theory of investment. So things like the Ferrari 355, E46 M3 CSL, 996 & 997 GT3, R32, R33 and R34 Skylines, RX-7, Supra, NSX. I do see an argument for further appreciation of some of the 90s cars though, based on their blend of competence and feel.

And house, service, protect, clean and maintain them. Insure, tax and mot. Move, arrange worry, manage and support. Spend time money and resources to look after your investment and hope no one steals, damages, burns down, scratches or accidentally damages something that might reduce their value...

Or just invest in some funds and forget about it.
