Snorty air filters
Discussion
Mine are arse.
When attempting to make maximum progress they simply cannot get enough cold air in, so the car stutters which ultimately isn't good as I am losing poke.
They are, if anyone can remember k and n's hovering right above the manifold. I don't have an airflow meter either. This ultimately means the engine is lean, and in the long term will burn valves out.
I need a set up which involves two long hoses, AFM, connected preferably to a foam K an N filter. Is there such said beast or will I have to drill two big holes in my newly repaired bonnet, to poke the two k and n's out for some forced induction.
I haven't grinned this much for years. :D

Presumably yours is MAP based instead? If you want to change to an AFM based system I guess you'd need to change the ECU too. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the MAP based system, it's just more likely to be thrown out by changes in the engine/intake/exhaust systems. If yours is running lean enough at the top end to cause a misfire, you've got big problems. Maybe the misfire is caused by something else though, there's nothing about the MAP based setup that would inherently make it run lean. Ignition problems tend to become more obvious at high revs and full throttle so may be worth checking that everything is up to spec there.
If you can extend the air intake pipes forward and pick up cold air from in front of the radiator you'll potentially get more power, which is worth having of course, but I wouldn't expect this to cure the misfire.

mine is a 91 S3 and does not have airflow meters as it uses the MAP system..
The filter is towards the front of the bonnet and is connected by a couple of hoses.....
you can see the reference number on the photo for the k and n filter set up.... easy to put a new bracket in or you may still have the old one...

That's the little badgers pies / doddze.
It's not a misfire as such, just slightly hesitant. It probably needs a few good runs as although I have serviced it, it was sat in a yard for 7 months through the winter.
Maybe a set of leads wouldn't be a bad idea.
What's the MAP system then?

Can you remember where you got yours from Doddze, I need to treat myself.

I got a replacement filter from my local car spares shop... took a couple of days and he got it in.... I reckon if you print the pictures and take them in to anywhere decent with the reference number of the filter ( I used the one from the parts list they will sort you out the filter and the plastic housing it fits on...
the filter cost me £33 and the only reference on the box was C3004
