Even supposedly well looked after N54’s are capable of biting (I found out the hard way).

As well as the usual turbo, HPFP and injector issues watch out for the cam ledges wearing. I bought a stock, two owner, low mileage car and got bitten with the latter. Normally I’d be wary of a tuned / modded car but it made bigger all difference! laugh

The tech in the E9x car is easily upgraded with an Andream screen which with give you CarPlay and Android Auto. Can be done in the E8x too, but the earlier folding screen is poo.

Aesthetically, I prefer the M Sport bumpers on both plus you get a nicer steering wheel.

Buy this one.
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2022122928...

I know the previous owner and it's only been in the hands of the seller for a few months, now they're leaving the UK.

The person I know put a lot into it and runs his own small business doing car repairs and sales. If you like the look of it I can point him to this thread to give you some history.

I know it has the rare DCT gearbox, has an MMI box installed for Android Auto/Carplay, M3 control arms, high pressure fuel pump replaced amongst other things.

In the used car market don't be afraid to change the things you don't like as otherwise it can lead you to discounting a good car. Interior swaps are something you can DIY and there's plenty of other colours that come up for sale.

Why would anyone in the right mind try and sell a car like that, using pictures of it being absolutely filthy… Bloody stupid and it’d make me skip to the next

Being lazy. That's why I commented as I know the provenance and the current owner has little to do with it. I see at least two thirds of car adverts with very little description, dirty interiors that could be cleaned up in an hour etc.

Baffles the hell out of me too. Even more so when a dealer does it!

All of those adverts look suspect, big HP claims, likely modified or DIY'ed in damp shed under the current owners tenure.

The E9x platform also has stuff such as broken ground straps, wet battery compartment, a rotting positive battery cable & terminal issues that can lead you stranded. For MOT purposes, the SRS/Airbag warning lights can come on due to moisture under the seats or an aging loose connector at the battery safety terminal.

Then you got your usual coilpacks, injectors, coolant leaks etc etc to worry about ...

Try find a standard model, with full BMW and/or specialist history, if there are frequent long (15K+ mile) intervals between oil changes even if 'FSH', avoid these.
