I hot an advisory on my MOT and decided to leave work until the next interim service.

Its a 66 plate and decided to get the interim done with vw. That bit was fine but brakes came up again.

Front pads are 80% worn need replacing
Rear passenger side pad has gone and needs a disc (So two pads i assume).

The price...

Front work £246.30
Rear work £449.53

Parts on euro car parts comes in at about 200 quid on pagids!!

Just absolutely unbeleivable to me this is a reasonable price.

If you look at the full retail price on ECP of the parts without any discounts, that's what most dealers will charge you, plus another 20% VAT on top.

I think if you go on the VW site it gives prices maintenance on vehicles 3 years and older. I think last time I looked, front discs and pads for a Bussat where around £500-550 supplied and fitted I priced up the parts on ECP at around £140 including a fitting kit, and my Romanian mechanic does it for £60. I can get it cheaper if he orders the parts using his trade account, but I collect and pay. If they are delivered the cost is higher. My mechanic said that if I wanted genuine OEM VW parts then it would be around £50 more from TPS.

Pagids are perfectly good products, my mechanic and I can't fathom why people jizz over Brembo, just because they're available for their shopping trolley.

Labour really kills when you are paying someone else to do the work.

I would say not out of order but you may well be able to beat the price by going down the food chain to a small local garage.

If you look on ebay too you can normally find a seller doing a full kit from someone like mintex for decent money.

Oh, Ive got a Mate who is doing it privately for me and will probably only want an hours worth of money to do it.

I just find the dealer pricing laughable.

Interestingly when you buy on ECP they have a list of local fitters and pricing is pretty low compared to the stealership original quote pricing.

What is unbelievable to me is that you’re shocked that a main dealer charges so much.

When you take the car in to have the brakes done by your local guy, do some quick man maths for his wages per year, plus: any staff he employs, the size of the premises, energy costs, the ‘free’ coffee machine and lounge, the business rates etc etc. Then do the same at the main dealer.

If you want to take a car into a polished steel, glass and tiled palace, you pay for it. And here’s the kicker: many main dealers aren’t very good! They can’t repair, they just replace with new, and some don’t actually replace those difficult parts on the service list, even though you’re charged for it.

Tread carefully.

If you mean a VW indie, the trouble with them - at least the well regarded ones around us - is they tend to have their prices set just below the dealer so they’ve followed the dealer prices up.

I think VW have dropped their fixed pricing now too - they got to about £800 for a cambelt and water pump change before the costs disappeared. What they have done is reduced the price of “All In” to make it seem a no-brainer, but then they rinse you for all the additional work required.
