What’s the most fun you can have at 50mpg?
Discussion
Easy, Caterham 170 (the one with the Suzuki 660cc turbo triple), which did 56mpg in Top Gear's road trip
Does it have to be achieving 50mpg whilst having fun or is it more of an either or thing? If the former, I think it’s a big ask. As alluded to by other posters suggestions, I think the fun needs to come from something other than speed, namely sensations (steering/handling, open top motoring etc).

Considering only petrol or diesel, what do you think is the most fun car you can drive that can achieve real world 50mpg?
Smart Roadster. Already said it today in another thread. Most fun car I’ve owned and I reckon I’ve owned some pretty fun cars.
My Roadster would easily do 48-55mpg. Drive it right and you’d be in the 60’s. Think 66mpg was the best I got.

Abarth roadster or MX5
Small hot hatchbacks might get around that if driven for economy fiesta st, suzuki swift sport, abarth 595 etc.
S1 elise will do 50mpg
Caterham with the suzuki turbo engine
My MX5 NC2 2.0 does 19mpg in stop-start London city driving. It’s less economical than my old BMW 645d, and not far off my 440i coupe. Absolutely atrocious fuel consumption for its weight. Yeah, I think they've got better lately. The current 1.5 model is quoted at 45mpg overall average, so I expect a moderately paced drive on a nice flowing country road with the top down could manage both 50mpg and to a smile on the driver's face.300bhp/ton said:

I can’t look past the Seven suggested earlier for pure fun, but for something useable as a car, the Up! GTI has a pretty strong case.
