I'm considering a change of work that would mean giving up my magic "work pays for everything" expenses credit card. This isn't a problem, because the role will be better, but it does mean I might need to actually think about fuel costs, ie: not using my XKR for 450 miles a week as I have been doing...

I have two commute options:

Route A: 40 miles of good clear A road then 30 miles of motorway.
Route B: 45 miles of occasionally muddy, stop-start rural A roads.

I mostly do route B in the XKR which swallows about £25 of fuel at 23mpg per (return) journey.

Is it possible to find something quick and comfortable that could do this journey for half the costs?

I don't mind what fuel, but I can only charge at home as far as EVs are concerned.

And I'd want something at least as comfortable and pleasant to drive as the XKR, as I spend too much time behind the wheel to be rattling along in something awful. Possible???

M440d should fit the bill (can get the same drivetrain in estate/saloon if you'd prefer) and effortless power, decent suspension and lots of toys.

There the the M440i which would also work but save some petrol but not halve the fuel costs.

Personally a 3/4 series/C Class etc wouldn't get a look in, I'd go the next segment up.

The 20 inch wheels look better but are prone to cracking & the runflats hurt the ride a bit.

If you still want a petrol then the E53h is a very good option with a real world average of 35mpg on a run:

The RC300h is also a very good option & while it won't have as much go as the others on this list they're a very nice place to be & with the Lexus (as long as it's serviced by Lexus) 10 year/100k warranty this could well be the pick of the bunch:
