Some "Rotten" takes on Current News Stories

Well, since it's my birthday today (no really, it is) it's sort of a downer to see all the bad stuff that happened today, years ago, in the far left column.
Other than that, none of them really get a big reaction from me. I shudder to think that the BTK killer, or any similar convict, would EVER have a chance of parole, or be told he/she has to serve "at least" 15 years of a life sentence...what the hell circumstances could possibly get him off early ? Good behavior? Please.
That $5/gallon gas thing seems a bit off. It reminds me of the exponential rule for population growth: things are expected to get ridiculous by the math models, but in real life, there are other mitigating factors that cut things short of that.
They are developing ways to make liquid fuels from coal now, so gas prices may go up, but there are other resources that are being developed (in some kind of economic and somewhat clean way) so that we don't have to get fuel out of country. By the way, that bio-diesel and bio-ethanol is a racket supported by politicians who don't know any better. It takes huge amounts of acreage to make enough soy/corn/whatever to make fuel. And the process of making it produces as much CO2 as coal gasification. In 50 years, solar and wind power technologies will be a bit more competitive as well.

Thanks; actually the BTK killer, after serving 40, must serve at least 15 years minimum for EACH life sentence he was given, not JUST 15. I think he was given 9; therefore, he ain't gittin' out

Thanks for the clarification. Still, the notion that he might have only to serve 15 years of a life sentence for a horrendous crime seems a little bit wrong. I mean, life sentence should mean until he dies of old age. Thank God he has 9 of these 15-year-life sentences. :rollseyes:
I know what you mean! Every state however, is different. In Louisiana, for example, life means life, there is NEVER parole.

Uhh...nope. I remember when it was a dollar/gallon 10 years ago, and now it's over $2/gallon. But wait.. most of our fuel price is in taxes. It's real cost of import, refinement, and delivery is actually under a dollar/gallon. I was involved in a paper done by several of us, and this was someone eles's research, but basically, what they found out was that our fuel prices are mostly taxes.
So, aren't your fuel prices mostly taxes as well?
And then they fluctuate depending on the apparent market whim of the oil-producing country.
