Wow! That looks incredible. Can't help thinking the rear end may be a preview of the back of the new Europa.

I can hardly contain my indifference. If that is the result of all the hype then I'm seriously unimpressed.

That car looks like it does exactly what it's designed to do! Go quick round a track.

Lotus is a sportscar company, I reckon it's absolutley right that they should be making a car that goes right back to the basics like the circuit car. Hopefully elements of this phliosophy will contine in Lotus road cars to come...

Can't wait to se it in action.

Butler - Would Sir like something special to spank his Castle Combe monkey in today?

Pop - Why Geeves what a splendid idea. What did you have in mind? Anything knocking about in the garage around the 650KG - 243bhp mark.

Butler - As a matter of fact Sir I have just the automobile...

you having a laugh?

it's bodge cut-down S2 Elise with some questionable styling work...

at least the 340R was a finnished road legal car, this is nothing...

it's not a race car, it's not a road car, so what is it?

an over-priced toy....

if you want something fast for track only, go by a Radical/Juno/Jade/ADR/etc. they will all be WAY faster/cheaper/etc

You're missing the point!

It doesn't matter what it looks like, it's the fact that good Lotus are still producing a grass roots circuit racer and haven't yet gone down the BMW/hairdresser/poser market. The other cars you are talking about are all made by small specialist trackday car producers, not a production car manufacturer.

Of course it's an overpriced toy! So was the 340R, and this will be way faster.

I have to say that to me it initially looked a bit odd, especially the front, but it's starting to grow on me. Imagine a proper windscreen and rear window with buttresses and it's a not-so-bad looking update to the current road car. No doubt it's quick round a track, but if I were buying a trackday special, I think I would perhaps be more tempted by an Atom (heresy!) or a supercharged, Honda-powered 340r.

One interesting side-note for me is the engine and rear bodywork. Up until now, the supercharged engine was only going into the Exige because of the roof intake and intercooler mounted above the engine. This design shows they can also stuff the blown 2zz-ge under the flat Elise-type bonnet as well. Upgrade kits all round, then? Hope so!

How *exactly* am I missing the point?

Lotus are hardly a major volume manufacturer ala. Ford/GM/Daimler/BMW/VAG/Etc.

as for "producing a grass roots circuit racer" I have to ask 'where'?

this is NO race car, look at the facts, where can you race such a car? (as in what race serise)

then look at what other cars race in these, and tell me how this Lotus is going to fair?

it looks to me like they let some students loose with the parts bin for the S2, and this is the result.

if this car was entered into Britsports/VLN/etc it would struggle to come last.

as for being faster than a 340R, that has yet to be 'proved' and the 340R is a homologated road car.

Wow! Love it, I think it looks great, must admit the styling did take some getting used to but in the metal it looks lovely. I wonder if any clubs /lotus will make a club race series for it? I guess this depends on how much it costs etc.

Is the car in the pics supercharged? It doesn't look to be unless they've hidden the intercooler away somewhere. Presumably this is the same car that ran at Shelsley Walsh yesterday, anyone get a close look?

Yes it is the same car and it is supercharged which beggs the question if they can slot the supercharger in that car can they do it for the 111R

It was quite rough and ready but stil llooked good and I am sure they will have no trouble selling the 100 a year they plan to build.

Studying the pictures more closely now you've said it was supercharged, I'm guessing one of the intakes on top of the wings feeds an intercooler behind the engine (where the boot would be on a 111R/Exige) with the air exiting out of that opening in the rear end above the Lotus lettering. Difficult to see how they could implement a similar install on a 111R.

Everyone's talking about the look of it when the look is completely immaterial on a track/race car it is function over form on these things.

The figures on it are hardly earth shattering and the weight of the car running at the weeknd was more like 700kg from what I have read elsewhere.

I can't help but think that anyone serious about their track days or motorsport would go elsewhere. People who want to look the part might be tempted though....
