Base/Mid layers

What is the opinion on the best sort of base and mid layers these days? Merino wool is often mentioned, but there are lots of synthetic alternatives. After a very cold week skiing in France I need to update my underlayers and there is a lot of choice! Ideally something thermal, wicking and breathable would be best.

Unless you want to stink, get merino, it’s by far the best. Some folks like a little bit of synthetic in the mix for durability, i much prefer 100% merino, it’s warmer, softer and more comfortable.

The function of a base layer (indeed the layering system as a whole) is moisture management.

Synthetics are the best at wicking sweat away from skin and are cheaper and indestructible. They get stinky very quickly.

Merino is more comfortable and looks better. It's heavier, retains a bit more moisture but somehow it seems more tolerable to let it dry on you. Its trump card is resistance to getting smelly.

If you are in a situation where you can wash your clothes after a day or two then synthetic.

If you are wearing clothes for days at a time eg. extended mountaineering or ski touring then merino is preferable.

You can use silk, which has similar properties to merino, but is thinner.
