As much as I adored it the writing was on the wall for my E91 330i Touring. A springer spaniel and a love of bikes were already stretching the not overly large boot, but chuck in a newborn arriving and a new job requiring some work based mileage the size, age and mpg just wasn’t workable anymore.

I have an old shed for messing about in so decided to finally be sensible and look at a 2012 onwards A6 Avant, MK3 Octavia VRS or a 5 series Touring. After realising I didn’t have the budget for the 5 series I wanted, I then tried to get excited about the other two. Whilst the A6 is a handsome beast, with my budget being up to £13k I really wanted an S-Tronic car and any of those that were affordable had too many miles for my liking.

So it’s a Skoda then! As much as I tried on some diesels I just couldn’t pull the trigger, so after some man maths (less to go wrong, more fun to drive, better bet for the future, difference in fuel cost currently) I changed track slightly and decided to look for a petrol version instead. What I didn’t realise was how rare these seem in the earlier MK3 shape and therefore how tricky it was to find one. After missing 2 the day they were advertised finally one cropped up conveniently pretty local to me. Cue a mad dash to get there immediately, and shortly after I broke several used car buying rules: 1st car I’d seen, private sale (this is quite an expensive car for me), viewing at dusk, not much of a test drive as I couldn’t prove my insurance. Sold!

So the car, it’s a 2014 petrol DSG in race blue. Previous owner bought it 6 months old as an ex demo, it’s pretty standard spec wise so I’m really missing the heated seats in the bmw but it appears to have been well cared for and I think looks about as nice as a Skoda estate can.

As with any car there are some jobs to do:
DSG service - I don’t think it’s had one
Dash rattle - a reasonable dash rattle did my head in on the drive home so this must be sorted. Think it’s the drivers air vent but not 100% sure.
Front discs and pads an advisory on last MOT.
Service is due on time soon, however it’s done 3500 miles since it’s last so this can wait a couple of months.
Try and delete piped in engine noise in sport mode! Who on earth likes this!? Hideous!

Its not going to set the world on fire but as something that can be a little bit fun with massive practicality for the family I think it’ll do us well.

Hi OP,

I leased one of these - a manual on a 2018 plate.

Great family car but also fun for one.

I don’t remember being able to delete the piped in noise in Sport mode, but I have a vague recollection that I could setup VRS mode with the settings I wanted and NOT the artificial noise.

Good luck and enjoy!

If it’s the same as the golf then you can unplug the sound aktor thingy that does the sound generation.
