MX-5 Gearbox rebuild
Discussion
My RX-8 R3 shares its gearbox (6 speed) with some 2.0 MX-5.
Its a 2008 and has a weak syncro, a know fault with early R3s (2008 &2009).
I'm aware I can adjust the play between 3rd and 4th (I think) that may resolve the problem, but was wondering if there are any specialist that can fix it if the adjusting does not do the trick.
I'm aware I can swap the box for a early S1 6 speed, would have to extend an electrical connector attached to the box, however I would prefer to keep the R3 original with a R3 gearbox.
TIA

Is it crunching or popping out of gear (or both)? I’ve tried the adjustment in the hope of curing the popping out of gear on a few R3s but it’s never worked. It won’t do anything afaik to help crunching.
Silviu from the RX-8 OC (I guess you’re the same alisdairm as in there) recommended a place in Burnley to rebuild a box recently but the cost was £900 so not cheap
Finding a used 2010-on R3 box will be about half that cost and they certainly are a lot less susceptible to issues compared to earlier ones but it’s the ‘finding one’ bit that’s tough.
