Interesting point actually Daz - thanks for bringing it up mate - VERY interesting.

Certainly according to the people we've spoken to the limit for "acceptable" road use is 110dB.... and actually even at full throttle, everything bar an F40 and F50 and some of the older Ferraris, remain below this target with the "stock" Tubi.
However start throwing away the cats and fitting pipe-only RACE exhausts and you've got a problem.

I read the story of a German chap who had no exhaust at all (pipe from manifold out) on his E46 M3 and he was pulled over by the German police for registering 118dB!! That's sort of understandable.

This is a bit of a grey area actually becuase it is down to the "discretion" of the police but anything we sell (except the pipe-only unsilenced stuff) is never going to get you in trouble becuase:
a) We've sold a few Yoshimuras/Akrapovic items etc for the biker brigade and they regularly whack out over 120dB..... this is handy from both a precedent point of view and the fact that anything we sell is FAR quieter.
b) Even with a Tubi you're not going to be anywhere near 110dB - unless you start ordering some of the MAD stuff we sell (and plenty of people have - without problems). So basically you're in the clear.
c) A lot of the problems we've heard of result from the tone that comes with some of the shitty stuff out there. No Ferrari/Porsche/Lotus/Lamborghini customer we've EVER sold to or indeed heard of has ever had a problem - This is unlike the Nissan Skyline/Scooby/Evo VI crew becuase 110db of BASS sounds very very different to 110db of Tubi.... 110db of bass makes you feel queasy - and so I think the police are right to some extent to make a fuss.
d) Moreover a lot of coppers actually think a lot of these cars are MEANT to sound the way sound with Tubi so they don't bother.

Most of the people we talk to tell us no-one has the right to TELL them how their car ought to be.... not the manufacturers, and not the cops.... Fair enough.
When I get my 550 again - I'm going to unsilence AND de-cat it.... Its not antisocial so I don't give a FK if a twisted copper tries acting all PC on my ass .
It's this PC bullshit that has led to people chucking their stock stuff away anyway - the stock 360 sounds like a TIN with spoon rattling inside it after the 355 and that's purely becuase of this crappy Euro-PC -regulation/homolgation bullshit.

Aftermarket does not equal illegal.

Rich for the 996TT we've got a pretty mad one:
Full stainless exhaust system - 100 Cell Race cats with integrated competition silencer.

Had a bit of a fright a few weeks ago when I went through the centre of Hitchin late one night in the 360 (mit Tubi). There must have been a bit of aggro since when I got to the centre there were about 40 policemen milling about, jam sandwiches everywhere, the lot. Oh FECK thought I, as every one of them turned to look at us, as you would with the damn thing reverberating off the buildings. Went past on tickover with my shoulders hunched up expecting to be collared any second. But no, drove straight through no problem. Tense though.

Manu,

you are a bad man.

Kev, i was stopped on Saturday night/Sunday Morning. 3am ish by the plod for 80 in a completely deserted 40. No ticket just a polite word and a chat about the car and what on earth was I doing at that time in the morning. Already been past the local clubs with bags of chips being thrown at me :-). I then waited for the plod to drive off then floored making sure all the locals were well awake. i know it was selfish but it did make me grin, like a naughty schoolboy.

If I was a copper I'm not sure I'd know what a 'standard' 360 is meant to sound like anyway. I'd expect it to be a bit loud, to be honest, and certainly as tuneful as Kev's tubi system.

I wonder if I could blag my extreme exhaust on being 'standard on Cup Challenge Porsches'! It is pretty loud, but at least it sounds tuneful and harmonic. Especially on a flypast at 7000 rpm

PS Rich, sort the 996 out. They do sound like hairdriers without a little fettling. Lee77's sounds great.

Noise levels are not part of the MOT only gas emmisions are tested. When a car is sold as new in the UK it has to be under certain decibel levels, (105-110 db). It is illegal for someone to use an aftermarket exhaust marked with "not for road use" on the road obviously.

Unless this cop had the equipment on him to measure the noise level from the exhaust he doesnt have a case. The noise level has to be proved. Sorry the arguement of "its too loud becuase its an aftermarket exhaust" is utter shite.

Also if the copper does have a noise meter, don't forget to ask him when it was last calibrated?!?!

davidy

PS I used to live in Chobham, not far from Manu, and on one of McLaren's F1 test run routes, one day a Orange F1 GTR went past on trade plates, I went outside and could hear this car all the way up to Sunningdale and turn onto the A30 and accelerate towards Virginia Water, thats about 2.5 miles away, now thats what I call an exhaust system!!! Magic!!!

For bikes on race pipes you can get a little Rivet on BS stamp, or like some one I know *ahem* you can get the BS number etched on the silencer..... Its never failed an MOT yet!!

The wording on the MOT for silencing on cars is 'the vehicle should not be noiser than others of its type' also they only hear it on idle so a Ferrai should obiusly sound louder than a family saloon ( ok they dont new now which is why Manu sells lots of Tubi's!!) whereas the MOT man may fail a spotty youth in his Nova with a cherry bomb as it is obiously louder then cars of its type.

Ive taken lots of classic 911s to MOT and even the no silencer classic rally cars pass no problems, as they are not stupidly loud at idle. However on the road as they rev to 8,000 and emit flames on every gear change you have to be a bit carefull when passing the elderly william in their patrol car!!.
