Question that I can't find the answer to!
Caterham open car at a hillclimb in pouring rain, can you wear waterproofs over overalls?
Can't find anything in Blue Book that prohibits it & almost all at Kart races do.
???

No you can’t wear anything over your flameproof overalls, it used to be done but they clamped down on it about 10 years ago.

You just get wet.

Although we used to get away with shoving an umbrella in the passenger side for use at the top of the hill…Handy at Gurston.

Alternatively you just get out and hide in the timing shed.

In my my experience it does seem to be down to the CoC:
Anglesey April 2022 competitors in 7s were allowed to wear waterproofs
Pembrey June 2022 we got a rollicking for doing so...

Nope. Only FIA outerwear allowed. I’ve seen competitors get torn a new one for trying to sneak a pair of waterproof trousers on a wet day

Thanks, I guess that makes sense but wonder why kart racers get away with it?

Don't try and compare Karting & Car events as they are totally different risks & standards, just like race suit standards.

The normal rule with the blue book is if it does not say you can do it , you can't. So as the blue book says nothing then you can't.

I've competed in a Caterham in Sprints & Hillclimbs for 12 years, and during that time as you say i've seen some events allow it, some turn a blind eye and some outright ban it.

Personally i've tried it once or twice when everyone else was, but was never comfortable with the thought of putting a flammible synthetic waterproof over the top of a race suit. So over the years we've settled on keeping the Heater in, and on wet events you will see us gently steaming sat in the paddock. Under an umbrella, works well on cold events as well :-)

You get wet. Very wet sometimes.

My last race weekend at Silverstone, which is probably the worst circuit in the UK for club racing as the security staff and officials treat you like scumbags, we were kept in the holding area in torrential rain for about 20 mins before our session. By the time we went out we were all absolutely soaked through.

That, and the draconian and inconsistent implementation of the track limits rules, was the final nail in the coffin of my club racing "career".

Did you not have a friend and a couple of umbrellas?
