concerns over oil temp

The engine tuner who did my engine (and other Ultimas)
has told me to either fit an oil stat or do away with the cooler.
Apparantly, undercooled oil is a main factor in knackered bearings.
This concerns me as I have now done 4,500 miles with it like this.

This might account for the low water temp while cruising on the motorway.

Even the factory admit you don't need an oil cooler unless you do a lot of track days.

Anyway I now have an oil stat which I will fit before the weekend.
Spoke to Andy today to find out which is the flow and return on the sandwich plate. The fitting nearest the block is the return.

Just thought I would post this, as you could be running the risk of damaging your engine with a cooler and no stat.

Any thoughts?

You're quite right. I ran an engine without a stat and on the motorway could see temps of 65 degrees. You need a temp guage before you decide if you need the cooler in the first place and then you should have a stat as well.

I fitted an oil stat from the start and was always suprised that the build manual does not show a stat in circuit. It won't be contributing to the low water temp very much though.

I always intended to track the car and anyway the oil warms up to temp faster with the stat.

Hi Gary ,one on order might be hear for weekened ,also managed to get some valvoline VR1 20w-50 racing oil,guess next weekened is going to be busy .simon

Do you mean overcooled oil? ie the oil is too cold?

Recently purchased a stat from Canton to be use with a Laminova oil to water cooler. It kicks in @ 215F (100 C) as opposed to the more typical 80C. Well engineered piece of kit, made from billet (but also carries a billet price tag!)

Ah, well spotted!! (todays deliberate mistake)

I have an oil cooler with a large fan which only comes on with the rad fans - IE around 90 degs water temp. This seems to work well. Without the oil cooler it would overheat in traffic (only) So far been 12k miles and 4 years without a problem.

Fitted this oil stat and took it for a very short run tonight.
First thing I noticed was how quick the engine came up to temp
It must be working ok.
