any good pubs in the leicester?

FGess and I are off to Leicester for the weekend soon (to watch Tigers batter Bath :))

Any recommendations as to good boozers (real ale, pool table type pub) in the city centre?

Was a student there many years ago. Whenever I go back as an external examiner all the good pubs have been replaced by nasty chavy theme bars

Off the top of my head, here are a few (I accept no responsibility if any of these have become gay bars in the years since I left ).

The Black Boy, The Rutland and Derby, The Princess Charlotte, The Marquis of Grandby, The Dover Castle, The Star and Garter, The Swan and Rushes, The Angel, The Pump and Tap.....

bloody hell 800 - I was a student there only ten years back and I only remember The Princess Charlotte!! whenever im back there now the thing that gets me is the number of pubs with bouncers on....

I live in Leicester (unfortunately) and can confirm there are now no real ale/pool table pubs left.

The ones that the tigers fans congregate in pre match are:
New Road Inn, Dry Dock, Shifty O'Sheas, the Victory, Pride of Leicester, Swan and Rushes, Angel, counting House. All within a stones throw of the ground.

From 800's list, yes things have changed a bit;

The Black Boy - gay(ish)
The Rutland and Derby - refurbished, chrome and plastic, non-smoking
The Princess Charlotte - gig venue only, not been a pub for years

The Marquis of Grandby - Marquis of Wellington ok but a bit of a trek
The Dover Castle - most prolific gay pub in town
The Star and Garter - gone, now student halls
The Swan and Rushes/The Angel - mentioned above
The Pump and Tap - ok, ditto Marquis above

edit to add: if its real ale you're after go to the Vaults (Wellington Street) no pool but the only place I can think of that does real ale, not far from the ground either

You obviously havent been out in Leicester for some time. The Vaults is now "Out of the Vaults", in King Street.

Used to be called Vin Quatre, but was taken over a while back. Along Kings Road, at the corner of Kings Road and New Walk. Many, many good beers on, and

THERE'S A BEER FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND!

The food they serve is Tapas. Close to the Rugby ground as well (in fact, a small diversion from the railway station)

PS Is there much of a Pistonheads Leicester scene? Might be worth meeting up one evening...

I asked me Julie (from Glenfield!); she's more a footie fan than rugger, but she says Shifty's, Swan and Rushes or Victory....

Oh, and something about 'You're going home in a Leicester ambulance', whatever that may mean...?
