Why the hell do they promote idiots to these positions in FIA , great tenure from Max Mosley , following the tragedies in the 1990s working closely with the great late Sid Watkins , to change the safety of the sport for the better then creating the IADC ,

Same with Jean Todt great leadership ...............pass the baton over to Mohammed ben Sulayem,,,, err no .
Sorry , having worked in the UAE one of the most oppressive regimes in the world , you promote people from this cultural background and this is what you can expect ..............same as hosting the world cup in Qatar

It doesn't bloody work

out of curiosity
Did Hamilton and Wolff turn up this year ?

here's a version with some earlier comments about the cost cap from the president:

I like how he has Domenicali there as a minder ...

I suppose necessary when you are standing up in public to present the trophy to a team that agreed themselves that they broke the rules.

That was a pleasing level of awkwardness for Horner to endure in front of his chosen industry peers and worldwide audience...

Depends on his religion, surely, not where he comes from or the local laws there?

Well I’m sure he didn’t, but having seen him address a crowd on several occasions he’s clearly not at ease with the situation.

Hamilton didn't turn up, he was "travelling" apparently (https://www.autoweek.com/racing/formula-1/a42209612/the-f1-news-you-missed-from-fia-prize-giving-gala-in-bologna-italy/). Not sure about Wolff.

that's a disgrace he didn't turn up last year and was fined a desultory 42k .. No excuse this year and he received an "Action of the Year award " from the fans

travelling when you have a private jet is not an excuse

Lewis doesn't have a private jet any more as he is an excellent role model.

To curtail his enjoyable travels to attend a boring function is quite normal for these type of events. I am not sure how old you are but I have seen most awards have one or more unable to attend. It is normal accepted practice to hear "cannot be with us tonight". Most fans do not care because they accept that their chosen star should enjoy their life and not pander to their fans every whim.

Lewis has only ever missed an F1 race, and that was due to covid.

The fans will still continue to lavish awards on the stars that excel. They do so because the stars give them enjoyment in the course of their chosen activity, not because of an event outside of it.

Have a drinky and relax.

You would normally hear "X can't be here tonight because he is attending something else or he is not well or whatever". Not travelling. I would also expect some kind of excuse, even a typical BS one.

It just feels like Hamilton is still punishing the FIA for last year, as disappointed as he is. Maybe he just couldn't bear seeing Max getting awards again, it is a possibility. But he is normally the bigger person, so it strikes abnormal for Hamilton to act like this. This is the surprising bit, he normally does everything for his fans, so not attending this feels weird.

Thats right, a paragon of environmental virtue

Except that he races cars in a series that churns through an unbelievable amount of resources for fun.

What exactly is he a role model for in the context of no longer having a private jet? Doesnt he fly anymore?

Keep up, firstly I think it is only Max who has a private jet at the moment, Lewis sold his years ago.
Secondly, it is only the top three drivers required to attend, so, no problem if he chooses to do something else.
Why do you have a problem with it?

Perhaps you are upset that he visited Gt. Ormond St. Childrens' Hospital a couple of days ago?

he's a role model for silently enduring criticism on both sides of ever issue from a contingent of people who 'think he's good on track but just can't stand his personality, really'.

Not really answering my question to Phil, who was trying to link his lack of Jet to being an environmental role model.

Every top level sportsperson faces criticism from all sides. He carries himself very well these days when he speaks, admirably so, he's come a long way from sulking on the poduim at Monaco for example. However in the context of the environment its laughable to suggest he's a role model.

Why is that? He is vegan, drives EVs despite having a garage full of exotic cars, sold his jet and travels scheduled flights instead. Surely that is an excellent example of how to minimise your personal environmental impact?

Also, just a mention that F1 is committed to carbon neutrality and has passed on lots of R&D design which has had a massive positive impact on road car emissions.

Because as above he still travels the world for a sport that consumes vast amounts of the earth's resources with no tangible output. He makes his money by consuming vast amounts of resource on a pointless and damaging (in the context of being environmentally friendly) sport. Just because its (laughably) carbon neutral, it doesn't take away the fact it uses huge resources.

I don't have a problem with that, I love F1, but I cannot see how anyone involved can be a Role model for the environment.
